I'm startinbg two all new tb hives in April. I'm wondering if putting wax foundation on the first bar and cutting it to the angled shape of the sides would encourage the bees to make top bars 2,3, etc. straight.

I wouldn't. But if you do, put it in as bar # 3 or 4 not #1.
