I've seen a lot of different designs for tops, but I haven't seen that one.  It looks like it will work fine.  Put in a couple of shims and you can have a top entrance.  :)

Good looking equipment, nice job - I too find some satisfaction in designing and constructing my own beekeeping equipment.

The term most often used is "cover". The usual understanding is that the "top" of a hive is the super beneath the cover, or inner cover if one is used.
