There are certainly people who hope so.  Kind of a sad commentary on our times.
They are so divorced from their own interests that even when their own security and that of their children is finally compromised, they do not seek to avert the danger themselves but cross their arms and wait for the nation as a whole to come to their aid. Yet as utterly as they sacrifice their own free will, they are no fonder of obedience than anyone else. They submit, it is true, to the whims of a clerk, but no sooner is force removed than they are glad to defy the law as a defeated enemy. Thus one finds them ever wavering between servitude and license.

Nah no one will remember he fired all the scientist and people in charge of heading off pandemics.  We are perfectly happy to rely on his medical genius.  Maybe not the stock market though.

We happen to know he has both medical and stock market geniuses at his disposal, so we know he will come out with better answers than senile biden or totally nuts sanders.

Except he didn't.  We have 3 agencies that handle this stuff.  NIH, CDC, and USAMRIID. They have done this for decades and have planned for pandemics for decades.  That 4th agency that hid did disband was something Obama added and it was redundant.  It had done little and been paid much.  There was no need for it and one of the things Trump ran on was getting rid of redundant government.

You don't "head off" a virus.  It will go until it runs out of hosts.  You mitigate the consequences of whatever the virus is doing.

In this case, it is not doing much unless you are part of a vulnerable group, elderly or immuno-compromised.

H1N1 was far more serious than this one is so far.  Millions made ver ill, and in this country around 12,000 dead.  Anyone remember the response to that?

Kind of like the stock market, It will go until it doesn't.  Unlike the stock market there are things that can be done to control disease.

I know you like to troll and I know you are smarter than you sometimes might appear from your posts...but nice try!   :cheesy:

The workings of the stock market and the workings of a virus are not quite the same.  I know (hope) you know that.

This might surprise you, but I don't entirely disagree with you about the military.  I have long advocated for getting rid of the Air Force.  Apologies to anyone who served in it, but it is largely redundant and quite expensive.  That said, now that the new Space Force is part of the AF, it is my hope that the redundant parts of the AF will be done away with and they can concentrate on the new service.

In a previous post, there is nothing like being..."darned with faint praise" which is an English idiom, expressing oxymoronically that half-hearted or insincere praise may act as oblique criticism or condemnation. A misnomer for a 'stab in the back' But its all in fun!

Really?  I can't imagine accomplishing anything without air superiority.  We need an army during war time (if there were ever a need to go to war).  We need a navy for guarding the coast and shipping purposes.  That's about it.  The rest is a huge deficit spending and a drain on the american tax payer.

The Navy, Army, and Marine Corps have jets, choppers and heavy bombers.  The AF was formed out of the Army Air Corps.  The Air Force was formed after WW2 when warfare from the sky was about flattening entire cities.  We don't do that anymore.  We haven't really done it since Korea.
The AF could easily be folded back into the other services and a huge amount of money would be saved.

What you propose has been done twice in my lifetime.  Done while I was serving.  Carter cut the military and so did Clinton.  The results were not good.

You can go back farther than that.  Pre ww1 and ww2 we had little military training or spending.  When we needed to fight, we had unprepared and untrained people doing the fighting.  Since tech was not an issue, we could shove a rifle in those untrained hands and point them at the battlefield.  We lost a lot of people that way, but it worked.  If the Europeans had not had trained and practiced armies to hold Europe before we entered ww2 though, it is likely Germany would have won pretty quickly.  The war in the pacific was a different animal.  We were a little more experienced by then and had ramped up our war machine.

Like it or not, weakness invites aggression.  It's not always the aggression of war.  We have seen China using economic aggression over the last couple of decades.

Get real, tech is always an issue.  Germany had air superiority but ran out of fuel.  We took in refugees from Germany and Europe and developed the atomic bomb.
We use to manufacture everything we needed within our boarders so switching to manufacturing war machines was no big deal.  We are at risk not because of the lack of military skill we are at risk because we don't make anything.  We have a voluntary military now.  Do you honestly believe that our military might is based on skill and training?  Absolutely ridiculous.  We win battles because of technology.  No different than the Europeans fighting the american Indians.  They were far better warriors.  Just like every group we come up against in the middle east.
China is a force to recon with not because of the size and superiority of its army but because they make everything.  Russia will never be number one because they don't make anything.

Yup and that is why they are inefficient. They should all be part of the air force, same with carriers.  In peace time like now we don't even need a navy if we were still building ships.

What I meant by that was that we could put millions of pretty much untrained people onto the battlefield and they needed no technical skills.  They only needed to run and shoot.

To win battles using tech, you need people trained in tech.  While there is still a place for the ground pounder, the unskilled soldier is less needed or wanted.  Yes, we may only train them in that one skill they need for that one thing they are doing, but we don't just shove a rifle in their hand and send them to fight.

If that were true, I would already be gone. Keep trying. I'll still be here when you make it.

What's it like in your neck of the woods? Everything heading for a lockdown, are people stockpiling? As we are both of a vulnerable age are you self isolating or carrying on as normal? Look after yourself I still need a foil! Or even a leg to chew on :cheesy:

I'm carrying on as usual, but that needs explaining. We keep about 3 months staples at home, then only buy milk and a few other items along the way. I am helping a friend catch swarms and spending time at my lake house. No gatherings over 10 people are allowed, so no bee meetings or other get-to-gethers.
How about you? I hear bad things about it in the UK from the lying MSM.

Depends on which "Lying MSM" you read, I tend to gather news from the BBC amongst others which I find to be pretty reliable. Also, we get news briefings from the chief scientists and the Prime Minister every day. Now you could say that is like listening to G&T  but I find the PM more agreeable and somewhat more truthful :cheesy:

PS Is the 'lake house' on Randleman Lake?

Things have gone from bad to worse, cannot now leave the house. No gatherings of more than two people, the whole country seems to be in lockdown. At least the government will pay 80% of everyone's salary, not that it matters to the retired! I always wondered what it would be like in jail..... it looks like I'm about to find out!

I feel for you. A few states have done that, but with no compensation. The dems say starve until they get their way. I have cut my travel to non-populated places only, but I am still free to go where and when I want. I'm hoping they find vaccines and cures shortly so life can get back to ""normal??"" if there is such a thing. Wishing you well. Post often to let us know you are all right.
