Nice haul idee, I enjoy teaching kids to fish as well
I'm so glad that someone took that time with me when I was a kid.....jim I didn't weigh that fish even though I had some scales with me...i just snapped a few pictures and let it go. the picture really does not do it any justice though,  if I had to guess I'd say 8 pounds. I do a ton of bass fishing and have been fortunate enough to catch quite a few big 8 and 10 pound bass. I am pretty good at guessing the weight.  Even though I showed this picture to a friend and he guessed the weight at 3 pounds.....I know better. Haha.

Jim - that pond is so beautiful, it belongs in a Norman Rockwell painting!

... but, uh, ... I don't see any hives - are you sure that's your place?!? :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

>What bait does he use for those?

Well, he never will say what his FAVORITE bait is, but commonly he uses creek chubs.  He often says people catch big fish and never know it because their tackle won't land them...

Largest fish I ever caught was 70 lbs. and 6 1/2 feet long, caught on a Zebco 202 with 10 lb. test line and a bream hook. #2 hook.
Maybe the fisherman's lack of ability more than the weak tackle.

NO, it was an Alligator Gar in a small river in Mississippi.

NO, it was an Alligator Gar in a small river in Mississippi.

It was a good catch, especially on the tackle that you was using. I bet it took a while to get him in, not wanting to hoss him in and take a chance on breaking your line. Those things are tough to catch. You had it hooked just right. Most of the time they cut the line with those sharp teeth. When I was a boy there was a fishing dock on one of the old Mississippi River cutoffs. Inside the bait shop was a huge alligator gar mounted and hanging on the wall. I was amazed, as a kid at the size of that gar!  I have never seen one that big since. I wish I knew more about it to tell here, but as a kid I didn't ask a lot of questions. I would always look at it in amazement every time daddy would take me fishing there.
