Ayn Rand on the 2nd amendment.
« on: February 22, 2017, 04:41:03 pm »
"The necessary consequence of man's right to life is his right to self-defense. In a civilized society, force may be used only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use. All the reasons which make the initiation of physical force an evil, make the retaliatory use of physical force a moral imperative.

"If some "pacifist" society renounced the retaliatory use of force, it would be left helplessly at the mercy of the first thug who decided to be immoral. Such a society would achieve the opposite of its intention: instead of abolishing evil, it would encourage and reward it."--Ayn Rand, The Virtue of Selfishness: A New Concept of Egoism

In addition to encouraging and rewarding evil, it makes everyone dependent on the government to discourage or punish evil.
They are so divorced from their own interests that even when their own security and that of their children is finally compromised, they do not seek to avert the danger themselves but cross their arms and wait for the nation as a whole to come to their aid. Yet as utterly as they sacrifice their own free will, they are no fonder of obedience than anyone else. They submit, it is true, to the whims of a clerk, but no sooner is force removed than they are glad to defy the law as a defeated enemy. Thus one finds them ever wavering between servitude and license.

These are natural laws and apply not only at the macro level of nations, but at the individual level as well.  They can be seen throughout human history, and in the natural world as well.  The predator with the claws and teeth preys on those without inborn weapons.

Of course it will be said, and has been said for millennia,  that we humans have the capacity for logic and choice, so therefore we have the ability to overcome such primitive faults of attack, defense and retaliation.  Yet these 'faults' have never been overcome except by a very few individuals, most all of whom became victims of the predator.
Winter is coming.

I can't say I hate the government, but I am proudly distrustful of them.
