You might want to look into a local bee keepers club as many clubs now have mentoring programs. They might also have equipment you can use.  -Mike

Welcome to the group.  You might go into your profile and enter your location there, as the answers to many questions are very location specific.  You can ask lots of questions here and probably get lots of answers, some of which will agree with each other.  It's a good place to learn, but as someone else pointed out, local clubs are a good place to meet other beekeepers and LA should have several clubs.
