Common Plants/Trees
« on: December 20, 2006, 10:58:26 am »
I notice that various areas of the world seem to have common flora and fauna but use different names. eg. i have read a couple of post which make mention of lemon grass as bait for bees. started to check  and it seems to be what we out here call fever grass.

Sean, there are so many different plants out there that have many, many names.  It is rather confusing, and many people toggle between the common names and common names (LOL).

this is an example of a very pretty plant, that has several very pretty names that go with it.

Nigella damascena, (love-in-the-mist, devil-in-the-bush).   Impatiens, (busy Lizzies, touch-me-not).  So, just bear with it, nothing you can do about it, sometimes many names for each plant and you just have to get to know the one that you like to use.  Great day.  Cindi

It is indeed interesting the names of plants.  Now when you refer to lemon grass as one called "fever grass" in your area, it reminds me of a perennial that grows here called Feverfew  Tanacetum parthenium (latin).  It is used for calming nerves and reducing fever, as the name imparts.  This plant is in great resemblence of Chamomile, which is wonderful for teas that calm the nerves, the bees enjoy Chamomile.  But....Feverfew is rather bitter, and the bees do not not like it one little bit, so they say.  Probably hideous tasting nectar.  Maybe for pollen only, who knows.  Don't even begin to remember all the plants names. I have been involved extensively with horticulture for about 20 years, and still have the tiniest bit of vocabulary, compared to the gurus of the gardening scene.  Good luck, still keep pen in hand.

I have compiled a wonderful list of plants that are especially attractive to bees.  I put it in our bee club's library and I see many of our beekeepers have taken a copy of it, hopefully the plants I cited will help give a little bit of extra food for their bees.  Have a great day.  Cindi
