What if the bees eat this though? Since it has sugar water in it, won't it entice them too?

Beth, Don't make the holes large enough for the bees to get in, and don't tip the jar upsided down like you would a bee feeder jar.

we used to put salt around the foundation of our house to discourage wood ants.  however it also discourages grass and other plants by the time you apply enough to keep the ants out.  it also washes away any time it rains.
vegetarian???  isn't green stuff for growing meat?

I don't have an ant problem ( yet !?! Sshhhh,  and knock on wood  ) but I have heard people using and having very good success with cinnamon sprinkled around the hive in liberal amounts. When the rains come and wash it away,  just sprinkle more around. :D
