unfortunately Jim was right. Opened the hives yesterday and the "strong" one had no brood at all. No sign of laying workers thankfully.
In the meantime the weak one seem to have got itself organized. Still not as much brood as I would have liked but I think with the clover flow happening right now they are filling it up with honey. The brood frames were much better organized this time and there was brood at all stages. Took one frame of open brood and moved it to the queenless hive, and put an empty frame in to give the queen more space to lay.
New queen is on order.
4 years as a beekeeper and still making rookie mistakes :(
