I think I figured it out. A simple pic or even a simple statement as to orientation such
as 90 deg or perpendicular would have been nice.

I reckon the word we are looking for here is "intuitive" - #3 is certainly
not that. Kudos for sorting it ;-)
It seems to me it is often the case manual writers around bee stuff
assume the buyer has done it before, or owns skills the assembly requires.
Certainly Yotube.c*m reflects this with many a video nailing very basic stuff.
Posting as I had to ask myself why the use of "basswood", something I had
never heard of but assumed it was USA speak for Balsa - a common craft
wood here.
