Small External Colony On Crape Myrtle Tree
« on: September 02, 2010, 10:41:50 am »
Got a swarm call yesterday afternoon that wound up being an established colony on a Crape Myrtle tree. The landscaping guy put me in touch with the manager of the Hotel.

The manager said he called his exterminator and I explained that his landscaping guy contacted me and that I was on my way.

Glad I got there before they did.

The only problem is that I only had one frame with me, could have used three.

The manager and two other employees watched me do the removal which took all of say twenty minutes.

Afterwards I asked him if he was glad they weren't sprayed and he commented how awesome it was to watch the event and that he'd be keeping my number on file.

The bees are great and exhibit fantastic hygenic behavior.

Glad you got there first, too.  Do bees forage much on crape myrtles?  I have some big ones blooming right now in my yard and the neighborhood but done really see bees working them.
P.S.  Love your videos.

I was worried that you were going to have to call eagle eyes to come find that queen.  You might could have just cut the limb and placed the whole hive with all the comb still on the limb in the box to take them home.  This weekend I had 2 handful of bees that stayed in an old hive box after I move the hive middle of the day.   I drove home saturday and took them to church sunday morning with them in the hive box without a lid on.   They just stayed in the bottom of the box.   I put them back with their family Sunday afternoon.

Idaxon, bees don't seem to get much from Crape Myrtles.

I added four frames with black pierco and feed this morning.

They are doing fine.
