Title: My son and I caught a swarm today
Post by: pdmattox on March 05, 2007, 06:24:55 pm
My son Austin and I caught this swarm by some hives today when we went to make up some nucs.  They were so high I had to put the 14' ladder in the bed of my pick up to get to them.  Austin took most of the pics.

In the first pic look in the pine tree to the right of the hives.

Ya see. if you weren't slacking with Understudy at the resturant all night drinking and talking you probably would have gotten back in time to prevent that. I tell you that Understudy is one troublemaker.

Nice swarm. I widh my cut outs were that easy.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

Good job and great pics. Tell the boy he did good. I see you had the same problem I have. How to loop a limb off with the shears and hold the swarm too. I see you used your neck. I've done that, but it's harder with a green oak limb.  :-D

Looks like fun, I'm jealous too.  Maybe when the arctic weather leaves I'll get a chance.  Wish my swarm retreivals were as easy as yours looked.

I also notice that Austin has good tastes....he made sure that your mug didn't make it on any of the pictures :-P :-D

What are these cut outs that understudy always refers to??

Cut outs are when you remove bees from walls or where ever they have started a hive out side the care of a beekeeper

Cut-out: \Cut"-out`\ (k[u^]t"out`), n.
1. An excuse for a beekeeper to come face to face with 50,000 stinging bees who are living somewhere rent free and give them an eviction notice.

A cut out is removal of a hive from a wall, roof, of structure. This can include boats, cars, and other similar items.

The bees have been there for long enough for there to be comb. Sometimes they have been there for months, sometimes years. They are messy, sometimes scary, and always interesting.

Jerrymac said all that in one very neat sentence. So I should shut up now.  :)

Sincerely,
Brendhan
