I don't always get help in the spring, so I've developed this way to split large colonies into single box "splits" quickly and easily.
Step 1 : Confine queen to either brood box for a minimum of 3 days.
Step 2 : Inspect both brood boxes for the presence of eggs identifying location of queen.
Step 3 : Move queen right brood box to lowest box.
Step 4 : Bring up frame of eggs to ensure presence of nurse bees. Inspect split and parent colony for equal parts brood/honey/pollen.
Step 5 : Move split to new location once all flying activity has ceased for the day.
Step 6 : Add new queen at new location.
That's it folks! 6 steps! When your splitting a few hundred a week by yourself, time is of the essence. Of course you could also shake all the bees of the frames of the split and place an excluder in between to keep the queen down and this works well too but I would argue that the split would need to be left alone for a few days to have an abundance of bees climb to the top. Thank you for watching. Please comment below with any questions you may have!
