Iwas just wondering how the bee gathering went. Did you get any pictures of the collonys? Was the one bee swarm in the tree still by the time you got there?

Title: Swarm catcher
Post by: Beecharmer on April 05, 2005, 05:56:35 pm
One of the doorprizes at the ISBA meeting was a swarm catcher.  It was a very ingenious device.  It was made of a large bucket with lid and string attached to lid.  The bucket was on a pole and you could add several lengths of pole.  When you come upon a swarm, just put the bucket under the swarm and jam upwards.  Then pull the string and the lid closes.  Neat in theory, but would it work???

Sure it would work.  You can improvise alot of devices similar to that to recover swarms hanging on limbs.  Just pull it back down, pour them into a hive body, then lay the basket beside it so the rest can march in.  I always liked to put a frame of open brood in the box to help hold them.
