Is that what we call a persimmon?

Yes, it is called Kaki persimmon or 柿 :?, it is native to China. But I have read, see below, there is a variety native to Eastern North America.

My favorite type are what they call here Fuiji, Japanese variety. They are somewhat crisp like an apple. They don't have to be completely ripe to eat, they don't take the moisture out of your mouth like the really soft type which I like as well. Persimmon, I have found is not a fruit that is desirable by all, I happen to love them, but know many who won't touch them. That leaves more for us! :-D
