Soundclip of buzzing drone
« on: June 11, 2020, 09:47:06 am »
Hi, I'm trying to learn what sound a honey bee drone makes, so that I can understand more the activity within the hives.

I tried google, but I had no luck. Anyone has a sound clip to share?

I have never seen a sound clip on the internet for a drone bee.
I can tell you there is a distinct difference between a worker and a drone.
Drones have a much louder buzz than a worker. This is because they are much heavier than the workers. In the spring, sit close to your hive and listen for the difference.

Not exactly like a wasp but kind of similar Jim?

Most of our wasps are pretty quiet. I think it is closer to a large hornet.

Got it, I hate it when a wasp is attacking and does a low fly over my ear!

Earlier this year when my hives were swarming, the extra drone population was so loud, I could hear the bee activity from my shed. I thought they hive was becoming angry or being robbed at first, then i realized it was just the hive front entrance and a lot of B52 bomber sounding drones going in and out.

Honey eater, just stand close to a hive mid afternoon as the drones are returning to the hives.  The deep buzz is distinct compared to the higher pitch of a forager.
I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.

Thanks for that van.

That clip was mind blowing. Couldn't sleep for five nights straight after watching it.
