The questions that I posed here in this topic may be worrisome to you but important to me. Questions that I have already searched for answers, by doing my homework but can not find the answers too referring to this topic and its heading name. I understand your point and encouragement of doing homework but in this case you point is off point in that respect.

Again I have already answered the August question that you ask before, on another topic concerning treatment.  I answered by quoting a well respected beekeeper. A keeper who has upwards of 2500 hives and uses Apivar in August (if I remember correctly).  I even took the time doing homework to search and quote for you then, so you wouldn't have too. I will help you anyway I can. Yes I most definitely agree with you bees need to be treated in Spring.  August is also important as well as winter, Apivar is not a problem in August as Formic can be.  And If I remember correctly is what Mr Binnie uses in August, OAV in Winter and Spring.  I will repost this for you to refresh your memory. Hoping It will help you understand why treating in August is important. If you do not agree that is fine and your privilege and are welcome to it. I say this respectfully.

> Just wonder why you guys wait till August to treat. Doesn't it make more sense to start in spring.

Just one example:

According to Bob Binnie.
Bee Culture
The Magazine of American Beekeeping
MARCH 26, 2019

WHY WE PRODUCE NUCS AND HOW WE DO IT - WHETHER FOR PLEASURE OR PROFIT, ANY BEEKEEPER CAN BENEFIT FROM PRODUCING NUCS.

"I submit that a beekeepers calendar actually begins in August, and that what we do then sets the stage for success in Winter, Spring, and beyond. I came to this conclusion before mite problems existed and believe this concept is even more important today. In other words: If you don't treat your bees right in late summer and Fall, you may not have any good colonies to work with in the spring."

I have heard him say at other places that a good build up of healthy colonies going into winter is imperative if you wish to come out of winter with robust hives. In my opinion his success of many avenues of beekeeping, not only of honey production, can not be denied.

Troutdog, I have been meaning to ask you, where are you located?

Ben
Apivar is great. Amitraz is in its sunset so enjoy it while you can. Formic pads are same price as apivar. Apivar works.
Seems like my point is missed.
All im trying to say is the more you know mites the more effective your treatments will be. Stealth ninja treating is better than blind bee club rhetoric.

Binnie is probably the best southern beekeeper I ever saw on utube.
I can't argue with anything he says nor do I keep bees in the south.

I noticed you didn't do your homework yet. Lol

Mites run on smell no eyes
Broid phermone draws them in on day 8.5.
Firmic burns their nose so no reproduction because they can't find larval cells. Can create change in brood comb ph tipping the biome to more virus load. Formic 2 does not seem to work on capped broid as well as formic 1. I like hot treatment best as it's over in one day.

Oxalic is absorbed through the mites feet and kills em. Easy on bees easy on mites.
Inexpensive, and now with smoke canons fast.

Amitraz works on nervous system. Also sterilizes drones.
I don't mention other treatments as they are ineffective.

Brood breaks kill 1 percent of mites. Delays build up but that's it.

Virus are given to mites from bees and reinfected back. If you have high virus loads requeen your apiary with upgraded stock. Virus also transmitted in vitro via drones to queen to eggs. Mites to queen, food to queens etc.

Most important thing is to get yards under control and keep mite levels low all year.

Less is more. Mites can ramp up tremendously when they feel threatened by excessive treatments. You will see mites like Mel explains in ots. We tried to sterilize hives from mites for a study. We used oxalic then formic then taufluvalinate with amitraz. We were getting 8 plus mites per cell in the brood.Btw not my idea just part of a drifting test we did for a company. If you try to kill all your mites you will probably damage your hive as well. Of the 6 that got that treatment protocol 2 lived to spring 1 died in June. I had no mites either lol.

2 per hundred in June will be 8 per hundred in August.

Not al all,I am right there with you except what I rebutaled on.

>I noticed you didn't do your homework yet. Lol

Wrong, just because I did not comment or say more, I felt not the need, as I was and am in agreement with you otherwise. If you have been keeping up with my formic post throughout the past 2 two years, you will know that I have taken a lot of flack because of my leanings toward formic. I will certainly not give flack to a person who is in agreement with me as to the potentials of formic, when the keys of its proper use are unlocked and understood. In this case that person being you. lol

PS Where was you when I needed defense from attackers when I was seeking answers of formic? lol.
