Built from strips left from a Kayak project of the Summer. Uses Lang top bars with 3/16" dowels shaped for the hive.  Strips were laid end to end then wrapped with five strips, then another layer of strips.  Between the layers of strips are two layers of air/foil insulation so it should have an R factor of around 8.  The black latches hold the top.  (http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6561/1001066e.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/1001066e.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)The back view shows a vent with expanded metal and screen.  There is a 3/16" opening entire length of bottom.(http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/2995/1001075c.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/651/1001075c.jpg/)  Fiber glassed exterior then 5 coats of spar varnish.

Looks nice. I was about to post some pictures of my TBH made from a 55 gallon drum..

This puts my hive to shame :)

Length is 30" and will hold 24 top bars with the spacers for honeycomb.

Wow, what a beautiful hive!

Did you put fiberglass cloth over the exterior wood and then coated that with varnish?

Blue, fiberglass over exterior strips, (not ends) then five coats of spar varnish.  Counting on the propolizer to finish the inside.

That is very Interesting ! I am looking at a bucket full of strips left over from my cedar strip boat. Now I know what I can do with them. Thanks for the idea!

Pretty, any reports on how well it has done?
