Do Bees Have a Taste?
« on: August 23, 2021, 11:22:07 pm »
I have Italian mutts. If I had a different sub of bees, right beside mine, foraging on the same plants, would the honey taste any different based off the enzymes they use to make honey?

Yes, two hives right beside each other will make honeys that taste differently. In fact a single hive will sometimes make partial frames of different honeys.

It is partly because of the difference in microbiome of the honey gut.

It is also partly because, at least in a mixed floral environment, the bees don't share information about forage sources from hive to hive, so one hive might be making honey from a different mix of flowers than the other.

Way to test would be to put them in a monofloral environment and then compare the honeys. I don't have that opportunity here.
