1 queen moved up, 1 queen moved down
« on: June 08, 2014, 02:49:13 pm »
Just checked on the hives. I went into the Buckfast first. This hive was unpackaged about 3 weeks ago into a deep and two mediums. The queen was laying the top medium so I moved the medium down. Today there was a couple frames of brood in the deep. There was a tiny patch of drone cells. I frame of mostly capped brood was emerging. The population should be banging this week. I may add a second deep at the end of June.
I then checked the Italian hive. This hive was unpackaged about about 7 weeks ago into 2 deeps and a medium. As expected, the queen is now laying in the top deep. As of right now, that hive has 14 frames of brood. Some of the frames are 1/2 brood and 1/2 honey. It seems the bees are moving it up to make room for the queen to lay.The medium is being packed with honey.  It looks as though I'll be going on with my plans to make nucs out of that hive starting sometime this week. I'll add another medium in case I get delayed in swiping frames.
