Agave for bees
« on: June 05, 2021, 02:55:39 pm »
We have this agave plant in our front yard that went into bloom.  Just when it started to flower the wind broke it in half.  About a month ago that center stem looked like a stalk of asparagus.  Today it is about 6 in dia at the base.  We learned that these plants die after they bloom.  All the energy from the leaves goes into making this flower and then it is done.  It got almost as tall as the pine next to it.  I am not sorry to see it go.  The sap is as nasty as battery acid.  I got blistered bad when I trimmed the bottom leaves with a pole saw.

It doesn't show well in the pics but the bees love it.  I wonder if they get drunk.  However, I think tequila is made from the leaves.
