Title: New foundation
Post by: chester5731 on April 13, 2017, 05:57:23 pm
When using new foundation how many of you only put in 9 frames and how many put in 10 frames until they are drawn and then switch to 9?  What are the pros and cons of using 9 or 10?

Always as many as will fit in brood nest.  In honey supers, you can get by with less if it is all drawn comb.  The advantage to less frames in honey supers is the fatter comb is easier to uncap.

If you use 9 in 10 or 7 in 8 the you get a bit more honey in a full super. If you are a migratory bee keeper and bring supers home to extract then you are a bit more efficient.
The positive of being more easy to uncap is balanced by the negative is that you have to handle more honey through the cappings system.

To answer the original question, always 8 or 10 with new foundation.

As the old saying goes , ask 5 and get 5 different .
I used some 2" starter strips last year.  Just can't sling'em .
