Anyone from western Wisconsin?
« on: August 26, 2014, 11:41:51 pm »
I am new to beekeeping... Guess I'm not even new, because I have no hives yet.  I am looking for advise on which style to build? I have been watching videos and reading trying to get educated as much as I can, I understand that climate is a issue.  So any help from people here in the Wi or Mn would be great!!! Ty

For your area, I would go with insulated Langstroth hives. Your best bet. Bluebee uses them and seem to work well for him.

Welcome to the forum Blood. Most folks in your area use langstroth style hives.
Some insulate, some don't. You'll have all winter to read up on them.

It appears most American beeks go with wood hives.  North of Ohio, most of the books suggest some form of winter protection.  You can do that by simply putting some foam around your wood hive if you like.  Most of my hives are made from polystyrene, but I do have a few woodies left.  The woodies can survive Michigan cold, even un-insulated ones.  However I find I get better yields and less work for me with insulated hives (wood + foam, or just foam).

Tbeek is/was in north western WI.  You might do a search for some of his posts about wintering up there.  It definitely gets cold up there!

I believe that with this one.
Of course, I usually find it very difficult to do this.
