I pledge to be a Beekeeping Merit Badge Councilor
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:46:20 am »
I am starting this thread to have a single place for all those that would be willing to be a beekeeping merit badge councilor to identify themselves.  I know we have had a few other posts where people have volunteered, but I would like to have one thread that keeps it all together.  This will be a great thread for those in the BSA to get an idea of people willing to volunteer.  Please keep it to pledges only and make comments on the subject in other posts.

Please include if you have scout experience, your area (city/state), and beekeeping experience.   Please don't feel scouting or extensive beekeeping experience is required.   Willingness to mentor is far more important.

I am now a mentor for numerous new beekeepers, including 8 or 10 kids. I also plan to keep it up for as many as possible for as long as I am able.

I have been a boy scout and have worked with scout troops in the past. I would like very much to work with scouts toward a BSA merit badge.

I have kept bees for 30+ years and am a certified Journeyman beekeeper in the state of N.C.

I live in Randolph County, N.C.

I am proud to join many of my fellow beekeepers in offering my time  to act as a beekeeping mentor for scouts in our area.

I was an Assistant Scout Master after 6 years of scouting and am now President of the York Co Beekeepers, PA, and pledge the use of our resources to scouts in the area who are interested in this wonderful activity and life skill.

With 35 years of beekeeping experience and a former scout I would enjoy mentoring.  I am in Bradenton Florida but considering all the technology available today I believe much help could be provided through a Skype or a web cam and digital pictures.

My husband and I both pledge to be Merit Badge Counselors.  I am a second generation beekeeper, my husband and 14-year-old son are third year hivers.  My husband and I were both Explorer Scouts, posted in Tulsa, OK.  All of us will do whatever we can to support this most worthy project.  Best wishes next week, Chris.

**Just Received**  Please help.!

Please  e-mail BSA and let them know you are willing to be a mentor. Many of us signed the petition and wrote letters stating we would make ourselves available to teach boy scouts about the honey bees. Now is the time to contact BSA . They are requesting that we e-mail them at:    merit.badge@scouting.org put Honey Bees in the heading

Just write a few words letting them know you are willing to mentor. Give them a way to contact you and let them know the areas of  your state/county you are willing to mentor  in.

BSA had added Bee keeping to 8 merit badges now. One is required to earn Eagle Rank. 100,000 boys will be learning about bee keeping each year through BSA merit badges as of 2015 and some merit badges will be in effect as of 2012. They are going to need our help to teach all these boys.
Thank you.
Christopher
