« on: April 07, 2019, 02:32:43 pm »
I've heard of people calling a swarm by making a drumming sound but never seen it

I called in a turkey so perfectly one time , I almost pooped my pants when he let out a Gobble from the other side of the same 10 foot base cedar I was hiding in
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Then all else falls in line
It?s up to me

of course 15 minutes after I posted that video one of my hives swarmed
I sat here and watched it
I tried the drumming thing and they did seem to move from clustering in a high tree to a fruit tree about 6 feet off the ground
the problem was they were right on the trunk, not a branch where I could cut it off
I got a scoop and scooped a bunch into a bait hive I sat on the ground under the tree
many flew back in the tree
I scooped again and then just shook the tree hard, it's pretty small
more went in the box but many went back in the tree
repeated several times and I think I have em about all
great fun

film in a while

Haha! That's funny in 2 ways - I'm sitting in my blind calling Toms in right as I read this. Too funny!

That would definitely shock you!

Gobble gobble
Are you leaving the box close by to let the others walk in?

yea, the box is still sitting there
the lid is cracked open and that's how they're coming and going
I think I need to get em up on some blocks, off the ground
I'm going to give them to my neighbor who I've been mentoring (scary thought, me mentoring anybody)
the video of it is almost finished uploading, it's neat, a black snake shows up at the end to eat dead bees
then a darn peacock walks through the yard

When bees are swarming in the air I have taken two boards and clapped them together.  The bees will quickly land somewhere close.  I never seen the bees swarm to a box as in video.  Bet pheromone was placed on the box.

My reasoning the bees collect after hearing loud BANGS is the bees think thunder and about to rain,  thus they quickly gather up on some limb.  Now folks, what I stated is a guess: that is a loud sharp noise is related to thunder as the bees see it.  I do not know what bees think, but I have seen my bees collect within 60-90 seconds of hearing me bang boards together.  Cause and effect may be misinterpreted by me.

I have heard several experienced beeks say to make banging sounds to cause swarming bees to collect, I did it and the swarm of bees collected near by on a limb.  Thunder is all I can come up with, if you have a better interpretation I adore learning.

BTW, my first experience at calling Toms was comical, Tom can running through the brush and was within 20 yards of me.  The bird took one look and scadadels,  I did not even get a chance to raise my gun, that Tom was gone in a heartbeat and left me with a WHATDA????

I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.

here's the video we got, I made no attempt to edit it so it's long
it was a problem because they were on the trunk of a small pear tree
I tried to scoop them off with a scoop like you use for animal feed but there were a ton of tiny branches in the way
anyway, we scooped a bunch and tried to shake the rest of em out of the tree
took about 4 tries but we got em
don't miss the last 2 minutes where the snake shows up
