there is an ad on craigslist saying that there are bees in a cedar tree (already suspicious) and they want them gone just tell them how much you are willing to pay to get them. i advised them that usually the beekeeper was the one that got the money and they told me they already had several offers.
i hope this is a scam. i really hope that there aren't people out there foolish enough to pay to do a removal (particularly this time of year).
i never charged to do cut outs/removals (too much liability involved in a world full of litigious idiots) but i certainly wouldn't pay to do one. tell me the state of beekeeping has not come to this.

Not me. I only remove swarms that I can take with out cutting for free. The rest is for a fee, especially ones in a tree. I have taken a hive that I picked up the logs and put them in my truck, for free.

I doubt they had many offers of merit.
The cost of a package will FAR outweigh paying for something you have no clue about.
package or Nuc.. you can SEE what your getting.
Cuttout.. you cant. You may have just bought problems.
Package or Nuc your assured of having a queen
Cuttout.. can you find the queen? Did your chain saw dice her into tiny pieces when you opened the log? Did the combs smash her when the tree fell?
Package or Nuc Your chances of transfer to your hive with most of the bees alive and well are good, YOU KNOW how many bees you got.
Cuttout How many bees die from start to finish? How many were smashed or cut up? How many did the hive have to start with? WILL they stay in the hive you put them in?
Package or Nuc You know the general background and lines of the bees your getting
Cutout You have no idea if they are feral or a swarm from someones hive. BEST case scenario is that they are feral survivors. Worst case, they swarmed because their hive was infested with SHB, wax moth... ETC
Unless the beek KNOWS the cutout history, the size and age of the hive, AND it is easy to remove/transfer, I cannot see ANY advantage to paying someone for something they had no part in acquiring or caring for.
Selling a cuttout is pure greed, and the seller is also asking for trouble.
IF.. the odd chance came up and I DID PAY for a cuttout.. I would cut the log out and drive off with it. The seller would be cleaning up the mess left behind and dealing with the bees I didnt manage to collect.
Basically.. paying for a cuttout is like going to a casino and plopping down your chips on the roulette table. Its a gamble, but worse than a casino, your not comfortable sipping on a rum and coke while you watch your money vanish. Your sweating and working while upset bees ping off your head.
I am sure they DID have offers... offers of..
"If you cant get anyone to pay, call me and I will remove them for you."

I never pay someone for bees unless they are in a package or a hive...

There are people that think that a feral hive is worth money, last year I saw a ad for a bee hive for 25 bucks.
They had a picture of a bald face hornet nest! I kept going back to that ad a couple of times for a chuckle.

Maybe some gung ho beginner will pay for it and take it home and wonder why they never make any honey...

if they got home with it they would have to be pretty tough. unless you're moving them in the dead of winter hornets can be kind of rowdy.

If it's an open air hive 6 feet off the ground, it may have been worth a few dollars in Apr. or May.
Not now, tho, and most likely a hornet's nest anyway.

That took a lot of guts. Very impressive. I bet he wouldn't pay for Roberta's bees though.

Here's the reply I got. Roberta doesn't sound like the sharpest quill on the porcupine:

they go in and the bottom entrance. tree is about 2ft around"

and probably the other thing Roberta isn't telling you is that Ron already took a can of wasp and hornet spray to them, and when every last bee didn't instantly drop dead, THEN they checked out what to do.

that's why i quit doing cut outs. after you get in and find a bunch of dead bees you "yeah we tried spraying them but it didn't work".
