I have been planting/over seeding rye grass in a lot of my fields. I have also been plowing the field behind my house and today I harrowed it to start smoothing it out. The first picture is after it was plowed, the second picture is after the first run with the harrow and the third is after the second harrow run. I am going to get more fuel so that I can run the harrow one more time and then I will run my brillian grass seeder with no seed in it first to really smooth it out and then do it again with rye seeds.

Jim, how was the field plowed? I don't see defined rows and I do see tuffs of grass which should be buried when the plow turns over the soil.

This field, as are most of my fields, is filled with old stumps. I had to use my new ground plow/disc plow. On the first row I hit a sunken log and the castle nut that holds the first disk in place stripped out. I cleaned it all up and put it back together with 5/16?bolts replacing the cotter pin. I thought for sure that would hold but it didn?t. I took the disc to a machinist and he made a smaller castle nut and cut new threads.
That did the job.
It seemed like every ten feet I was cutting a stump. All of the stumps are now at least 10? below the surface which enabled me to harrow it properly.

I was supposed to rain today so I was rushing to get the seed in the ground. It is now raining pretty hard. I?m hoping it doesn?t rain so hard that it washes the seed away. I?m glad that I didn?t use my broadcast spreader. It would all wash away.
With a brilliant seeder, most of the seed is covered with a little dirt.

Yesterday, my family and I went to get a Christmas tree. It was a really nice day, and we sat and talked with the grower for a while. He asked me about my bees, since he knows someone else with bees, and he wanted to know how my sourwood flow was this year. His trees were really nice; we're planning on going back there for a tree again next year.

Thank you Reagan, The Christmas tree trip sounds like fun. Did the tree grower say if the other beekeeper had a good harvest? You know, the tree farm might be a good place to display some if your excess honey if office space allows and he is willing?

He didn't say about the other beekeeper. He didn't really have an office actually, just a barn. It was a pretty low tech operation, but his prices were good as a result and like I said, his trees were really nice. He claimed to have the prettiest trees in the whole county, and that's saying something around here, as North Carolina is the 2nd largest Christmas tree growing state in the nation.

Jim has the seeds had time to start sprouting?

I checked it this morning and the seeds are just starting to grow. They are about two inches tall but it is brown. The over seed rye grass starts out green. This rye seed needs to bee planted in a tilled field. It?s funny, the over seed, thrown out over an existing grass field, is about the same size as the planted seed but it is very light as compared to the planted. You would think a heavier seed would find its way to the dirt than lighter one.

No. Just don?t use it much anymore. About once a year for the last 3-4 years. That usually has me going through the fuel system even with non ethanol and stabilizer.

The next time you use it, when loaded back on the trailer. Before pulling it out of the water simply disconnect the quick connect of the fuel line and let the engine run, burning out the fuel which is still in the Carburetor until the engine dies. This drains the gas from the carburetor, saving you the trouble described .

But the last two years it was a day of prep work, a new battery, re-wiring the lights and cleaning the salt corrosion from the wiring new light fixtures and accessory ports, new speakers?Although I was using it on a job, we spent a few evenings riding up to the waterfront fish houses with slips at the deck and grabbing some supper.

I know what you mean. Just for 'simple fishing' and trot line running, it hard to beat a good ole fashion Jon boat with a portable, detachable motor.. I have had both set ups. I had a 14' Jon boat with a 7.5 mercury that would do all I needed to do as far as basic fishing goes. I do not live near salt water, all fresh water in my area. Three major reservoirs, also 3 nice river cutoffs lakes as well, plus several smaller public lakes...

I thought disc plows were only use when the ground was chemically treated to kill everything so all you had to do was scratch the surface. Clearing the field of roots, stumps and big rocks is the first step even if you use a bottom plow.

I tried to use a Bottom plow when I first moved here. The Gallberry roots were so thick that I straitened out that plow to the point it is unusable.
The disc you are referring to is a harrow. It works best on previously cleared/plowed fields. It will cut through grass and other crops real well but not a field full of heavy roots and rotted stumps.

Of course. The field must be cleared to use the plow. And that is quite a job with a small tractor. I made a hook out of wide flanged steel to clear my field.

The new ground plow does a great job of cutting up 3? cross roots and old stumps.
It also saves a step because I then would still have to run the plow through.

Even if you used a bottom plow buried weed seeds would grow so it takes a couple of tilling passes over time to eliminate the weeds before planting. That is why Round up is so popular. Kill everything and then just plant.

Most of the soil did turn over. Hopefully some of the Bahia grass will come back in the spring.
I checked into using Round Up. Need to wait until spring to us it and that is when the bees will bee active

If only. The plants we prefer get taken over by the ones we don't unless we do something about it. A lot of neighbors lay bahia turf over their weed patch which looks fantastic for a couple of years until the weeds grow up through the turf. Here again to be successful for the long term you must strip the land of all living things before laying the turf down. And it doesn't end there. You also must install thousands of dollars for irrigation and keep up the chemical fertilizers to have a pristine lawn.
The best approach for beekeepers is to do nothing. Nature will provide weeds for the bees and the bees will propagate the weeds to their benefit. Here in southern FL the lawns are covered with Florida snow and the bees are all over it.

I?ve seen them from cordless drill size, to ones that go on a truck axle with the rear end jacked up. Never tried one.
