Is something wrong here?
« on: October 29, 2006, 12:41:33 am »
We set up our first hive last spring and used a standard bottom board and a screened bottom board, based on some instructions in a book. Now I'm wondering if we did something wrong there.  The picture below shows the details below the first deep. It shows the screen and the entrance reducer.

Is something mounted backward?
Should we have omitted the standard bottom board?

Your SBB looks like one of the inserts made to go in a regular bottom board.  It looks correct to me.  But I prefer one with a tray so I can open it up for ventilation.

Is there a removable block at the front below the screened board?  If so you DO have an extra bottom on there.

When a screened bottom board is mounted on top of a regular bottom board the opening of the regular bottom board should face the rear of the hive.  This is so sticky board and trays can be removed and cleaned without disturbing the bees.
If your configuration does not allow this it is on wrong.
