Moving native bees to a new box???
« on: December 31, 2018, 03:57:33 am »
Hi Team,

I'm currently holidaying at my parents place in central QLD. My father has two native bee hives and they are starting to fall apart. He is wanting to move them into new hives but is unsure as to go about it. I've never had any experience with native bees so not sure how to approach it either. Just wondering if anyone has done it?

Merry xmas and happy New Year,

Clint

G'day Clint,
What you ask is not complicated at all in simply moving them to a new home.
A box is provided and sat maybe 70 to 150mm in front of the Parent. The two joined
by a 19mm (ID) black poly tube, insulated if in full sun. The new home has a lump
of propolis and beeswax moulded into the 25mm entrance, a 6mm hole penetrating
into the box.
In CQ at this time of year they'll move over anywhere from 6 to 10weeks.
From there the Parent could be safely dismantled come May.
Tim Heard runs the Sugarbag site I link to, he covers a lot more for the enthusiast.
The new Home?
Avoid reinventing the wheel, a functional easy to build  - from untreated 4?2 timber -
design is linked to, my personal choice is to use the L?W measurements (detailed)
as internal not external;

Cheers.

Cheers Bill, good to hear from you as well!

...church mice are the equivalent of Led Zeph playing at our place.
So I only poke my head out at the mention of my favorite topic.
Hope your Dad is handy with a hand saw and hammer in getting those
guys a new home, eh.
Best for 2019, and thanks like. ;-)))

Cheers

Bill
