Best 5-frame nuc boxes
« on: August 14, 2020, 11:47:08 am »
So I have to give a shout out to some very fine quality nuc boxes and accessories from Blythewood Bee.
I wanted finger joints at the corners, so that reduced choice of manufacturer.  And I wanted them all from the same maker, so they'd fit well.

I usually buy Dadant's mid-grade or commercial hive bodies, because the corners match up better and the cutouts for the hand grips are less splintered.  But this company far and away improved over Dadant. Wow, just beautiful.  I did add 1.5 inch cleats (runners) under the screened bottom board, to slide a trash/SHB tray underneath.

Usually I fill corner gaps with exterior wood putty then prime & paint.  These nuc boxes looked so good I couldn't resist....I stained them.  I used Ben Moore Arborcoat which I've had on a fence for 5 years and has held up well.  The water does bead off, and there's a slight sheen to the stain.

Here it is assembled, before the cleats (runners) went on to lift the SBB for a trash tray.
