Will different size ram sticks work in two different banks?
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:03:40 pm »
In this June 2013 thread, http://forum.beemaster.com/index.php/topic,41645.0.html , I talked about getting some Dell 780 64-bit SFF computers running Win7-64bit and they have worked great.  I also bought a mini tower 780 64-bit and *finally*  took it out of the box and have installed Win-7-64bit on it.

I'm not at home where I can look right now but this is what I know...  The mini tower has 4gb of memory installed.  There are memory sticks installed in two slots.   The installation looks like:  mem-stick___empty-slot___mem-stick___empty-slot.

As long as the speed, voltage, and type are the same can I add two sticks of 4gb ram in the other two slots and end up with 12gb of RAM?

Thanks! (again :) )
Ed

ETA: corrected the last line to read "...4gb ram in the other..." rather than "...8gb ram in the other..."

Yes you can if they all match.
I would put the 8 Gb in the next open slot and the same for the following bank.
Ask at the store you'll need a model type though
4+4+8+8= 8*3=24 GB

If you were to install 4- 4 GB sticks = 16 not 12

Shazamm!!!!  Thanks for tipping me off to an error on my part, jayj200!!!  I meant to say "add two sticks of 4gb ram" rather than two sticks of 8gb ram.  I'm thinking of adding an "8gb kit".  So basically I want to add a total of 8gb (2x4gb) sticks to the existing 4gb (comprised of 2 sticks).

Well, I ordered 8gb of memory so hopefully it will give a boost to Photoshop and Lightroom 5 performance.

Take care,
Ed

The memory slots work in pairs creating a "bank". Put the new sticks in the empty slots without reordering the existing.
