Strawberries
« on: November 23, 2013, 08:51:25 pm »
I plan on putting in a strawberry bed. All I need is the strawberries. Any advice on the type I should use in zone 7a. We would like some that are good to eat and to can. We bought some at the local stockyard/yard sale last year and they are great coming out of a hot water bath.

I would sure locate the area Mr Kimble (county agent) and find out from him what is best for your area.  a good thing to know is that the strawberries we grow here can tolerate enough roundup to kill the grass without ending them too.  Don't go hog wild but you might consider a little test on yours once established.  Those plants are Ogalalas which are really flavorful everbearing but I am sure you have better varieties to grow.

josediaz; Since I first posted I've checked with a friend of mine who completed the master gardener's program. It somewhat boils down to where you're at and what is it you want out of your strawberries. I would suggest talking with someone who's knowledgeable. Big box stores has people who think they're up on it. We have mom and pop strawberry fields around here, I was thinking about checking with them. We've bought some of their product and it was great. We plan on eating fresh and canning.

btw; welcome to the forum.

I have a plot of about 2000 sq ft that I planted with June bearing straws.  That way I'm done with them when our other fruit and vegie crops are ready.  But they produce runners like crazy!  Luck!
