Title: Favorite Type of Tomato
Post by: bwallace23350 on April 24, 2017, 09:40:26 am
This time of year only means one thing to me in the garden and that is tomatoes tomatoes tomatoes. With that being said what are your favorite types of tomatoes? Mine is either a Pink Brandywine or an Oxheart Orange. The Brandywine is so much easier to grow but the Oxheart Orange is just a treasure to even see.

Sungold.  Each day I get home from work I take the dog and go down to the gardens and snack my way around them eating a few of everything that is ripe. The small tomato?s come in first, last the longest and are some of the sweetest garden fare.

I am not in to green fried tomatoes.  I am not much of a tomato  eater because it has to come out of the garden so that maybe 3 weeks out of the year.

I don't often eat tomatoes out of season but fortunately my tomato season will last a couple months. I also don't eat fried green tomatoes but I am kinda weird like that. A lot of people love them where I am. I use a lot of tomato paste and sauce though.

Same here.  You want Roma's for that.

bw One thing we can do around here is plant tomato seed when we set the plants we bought out. By the times the first ones play out the second bunch will be just starting.

Yep I stagger my harvest pretty good by spacing out tomato plants over several weeks or at least I did this year. I seed my own and buy some better boys for production.

We have 80 tomatoe plants planted... they are just starting to get time to fry up some green ones..  then we will be making pasta sauce, marinera, etc etc and canning it all here soon.

Gonna have to make lots of candied jalepenos too

Never tried Mortgage Lifter or Arkansas Traveler. I have read good things about Mortgage Lifter though.

Traveler is an old heirloom that used to be big back in the days that Arkansas was a big tomato producer. It ships well, highly productive and cans very well.

Sounds like something I need to try to grow one year.

My favorite is a nice red ripe tomato, variety depends on what you are eating it with, in or by its self.   I don't really care for fried green tomatoes but my wife does.  A good ripe tomato, fresh corn, pink eyed purple hull peas, fried okra, cornbread, maybe some squash variety, and some peppers makes a great meal with some ice tea to wash it down with.
My first set of tomatoes are just about through making, I had them ready early, they were blooming and had a few tomatoes on when it got warm enough to set them out, and in south Mississippi that is fairly early.

Good luck to you all in your gardens,

Joe D

That sounds like a great tasting meal.
I have a couple of Cherokee chocolates planted this year. Will have to see how the compare to Cherokee Purples.

Paste/Sauce: Heidi, Martino's Roma

Cherry/Grape: Hibor, Sungold, Camp Joy, Dr. Carolyn Pink, Green Grape

This is a sure sign more tomatoes of more varieties need to be sampled.  I rate Black Russian 7.5 on a scale 1 to 10.  Brandywine sometimes gets to 9.5.  I have an experimental breeding line that can hit 10.

I really like my brandywine but I also like an oxheart orange a lot. Of the two I like the oxheart orange probably better but have a harder time growing it.

Most of you are talking about varieties that I have tried with very little luck, except for sungold I do much better with celebrity, better boy, and heatwave.  I tried Wild boar and this was the best tasting of all for the 2 or 3 I got eat  before blossom end rot took its toll.

Anything you grow is better than anything you buy even if it came from HD.  Although I have heard people say the blight came from the box stores.

I heard that also but I buy some  better boys and a few others most years and they seem to do ok, especially the heirlooms. I grow most of mine from seed though.

My favorite tomato is Cherry and Grape Tomatoes.

I like cherry tomatoes the best also because I can just eat them.
