Title: Gas Jug tip
Post by: GSF on March 12, 2014, 09:36:50 pm
If I've posted this already just bare with me.

There's a great trick we've learned to replace the cap on the nozzle of your plastic gas jug. Go somewhere like Hobby Lobby and buy some of the corks that are somewhat tapered from top to bottom. I turn them on the side of my grinding rock and taper them some more until they fit inside the nozzle. Works great. I've taken the jug and tried to pour it out with the cork in and it held.

So when you need a couple more jugs try to find some at a yard sale. Don't go straight to them, just kinda shuffle around the stuff and work your way to the jug. Ask how much it is, then ask if they have the cap that goes to it. Of course they'll say no. Set it back down, look at it and ask would they take $3, $5, $6 or $7, what ever you see the average price. If declined then say we probably ought to get a new one anyway so it'll have a cap. Of course be polite. My wife has bought several 5 gal jugs for 3 to 5 dollars. She has a small grass cutting business and they come in handy. Also, if there's a hurricane threatening the oil supply you can stock up. I think we have at least 25 of different sizes. The most we paid for any was $8.

Whatever you do, don't buy one of the new ones.  They are worthless.  I went to the hardware store to buy the stuff to make a decent nozzle for the new ones and found an aftermarket one for $7.  Bad enough I have to buy the new jug, pay for this ridiculously complicated spout that won't let the diesel out, then I have to pay another $7 to replace that... but now, at least, I can empty a can in my tractor fast enough that my back doesn't hurt for a week afterwards...

I spill gas every time i use one of those cans with the safety nozzle. :-x

I still use some 1940's and 50's, five gallon GI jerry cans and large funnel. Thankfully they have build a couple of convenience stores close enough to drive the tractor to fill up.

Yep those un "safety" plastic spouts are a real pain. The metal safety cans and metal spouts are better but cost a fortune.

I'm a mechanic and to drain fuel tanks at work we use something called the magic siphon. It works good especially if you have a lot to transfer and don't want to lift it all. I got one for my granddad when he couldn't lift five gallons anymore and he loved it.

Was on my way home last spring, came by a rummage sale.  Got three 5 gal jugs, 2 with caps and one without for $7 for them all.  I get my diesel in a 55 gal drum, ask the station where I get it what they do with their old hoses.  They have given me two, one had the regular station nozzle on it.  I also get most of my seed and fertilizer from them.  I check the fuel in my tractor most every time I use it.  Haven't let it run out in 20 years.  Its been a good ole tractor, bought it new in 1976, could use some new tires.  Ha ha  yeap got to rambling again.

most of my gas cans came from the local landfill with (you guessed it) no lids

I can understand the reasoning for the new gas can design; to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from spilled gasoline or open vent plugs.  No that’s not a greenhouse gas thing, it’s a smog thing.  The automakers have been forced for years to go to extremes to prevent any gasoline vapor from escaping from the fuel system.  There’s charcoal canisters to collect/store vapors and feed them back to the engine.  There’s diagnostics to detect a pinhole vapor leak in the tank.  There’s misfire detection, closed loop fuel controls, catalytic converters.  A ton of extra work (and expense) just to keep hydrocarbons out of the environment.  It always seemed silly to me to make the autos go to such extremes and then let everybody else (lawnmowers, gas cans, 2 cycles, gas stations, etc) do nothing.  Of coarse most of these regulations were forced on the rest of us by California (CARB) threatening to shut the auto makers out of their state if they didn’t comply.

So it seemed fair to FINALLY make the gas can folks design a better can.  However I gotta agree with KingD and the rest on this one!  The new design is useless and counterproductive.  I usually end of spilling more gas with the new cans than the old cans.  I probably spill more gas each time using the new can than 1000 cars emit in a month.  Good thing I don’t live in California.  BTW... I also hate their GU24 light bulb socket!

Harbor freight has the old style of  jerry cans. The metal kind. There about 20.00 if you have a coupon.

have you seen the price of gas cans recently? don't think one can find the 5 gallon ones any longer.

>So it seemed fair to FINALLY make the gas can folks design a better can.

But, as usually, they did not make they design a better can.  They made them design a worthless can that requires rework to even be useful, let alone safe.  What I would like the government to do, is leave things alone.  I like my old gas cans.  I like my incandescent bulbs that can be used as a heater when I want one, and will work on a dimmer switch. Sure I also like some longer life bulbs that use less energy when that is what works better for the use I have for it.  I love the new LED bulbs when they are appropriate and even the florescent ones when they are appropriate, but they are not always appropriate and *I* want to be the one to decide which is the correct thing for my application, not the federal government.  Since the Bill of Rights in the 10th amendment to the U.S. Constitution says:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

I'd like to know where in the constitution the federal government was delegated power over the design of my gas can, or my light bulbs, or any of the myriad of things in my life they have taken over.  I've read it many times and not only does it not mention gas cans or light bulbs (which had not been invented) it mentions nothing of the some sort of things that did exist at the time of the writing of the Bill of Rights.

I think we know my position on the Constitution; but a lot of the clean air stuff HAS been forced on us all by the State of California.  Their almighty California Air Resource Board (CARB) has the power of God over the automakers due to the volume of cars sold there.  Either Detroit complies with their dictator rules, or they can’t sell a single car in the state.  I’m sure they’re also the kooks who have pushed this crazy new gas can design onto the rest of us.  The Feds have been a Jonny come lately and evidently gets their power to control via the EPA (rightly or wrongly).  Maybe the Feds are using their mandate to ‘protect and defend us’ as their excuse for controlling our gas cans?

Clearly they were trying to design a can which can’t vent hydrocarbons no matter what idiot got their hands on it.  However making a can without a vent is simply idiotic.

Well, we finally agreed on something...
