13 3/4" wide, everything else the same as 10 frame.

is that inside or outside dimension?

that is the outside size and the wood would be 3/4" thick(1x stock from you local lowes and home depot)

super dave, are you wintering them in an 8 frame super in PA? My dad is going to try to this year in NY, all of his honey bees are in 8 frames supers. They built up fast but I told him that 2 of them is equal to 1.5 of my 10 frame deeps so frame per frame it is the same speed. But I am just curious how the narrowness will affect the winter cluster up here. Any thoughts? Thanks so much, Country :)

im doing 9 frames now --i feel that 8 frames would keep the cluster tighter for the cold times

question, why would a person use an 8 frame hive instead of a 10 frame and can someone tell me why people use 9 frame hives?

They leave less honey behind as the cluster fits the box better.

Michael, do you think that dad's bees should survive a NY winter in the 8 frame supers as compared to all of our 10 frames that we have been using forever? As fast a build up and recovery in spring? Thanks,Country :)

really i cant remember why i started making my hives that size, but i just did and now im wanting to down size for even lighter boxes and the better wintering

They will do as well or better.

The closer walls seem to make it easier to build up and conserve heat. They certainly are not a disadvantage.

As well or better! Amazing, my dad still knows more than me! When I build more hive bodies should I build 8 frame supers instead of 10's? I started building mediums like Michael's site showed a few months ago and they are a lot lighter but I built 10 frame ones.

there is a guy out this way who winters his hives in nukes,stacks them high----i dont know if that is for me around on my hill with the wind, maybe if i had a pole i could strap it to-- hmmmm

I would worry about the mites from the top being pass down. The bottom hive would get all of them. :shock:
