In my opinion, the US's favorite sport is American football.  Baseball may have been America's pastime in 1920, but not anymore.  I'm not really sure why football is so popular.  I suppose the physical aspect to the game and the strategy is interesting to people.  I'm not a football fan; I watch the Super Bowl, but that's it.  I'm a big ice hockey fan, and I'm not used to all the stoppages in football.  There is so much down time between plays, and I tend to kind of zone out and then by the time I'm keyed back in the play is already over.
I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led.  And through the air, I am she that walks unseen.

I spent most of the day yesterday shooting.  My shoulder has a nice ache today that reminds me of all the fun I had yesterday...

Have you tried archery? I do both.

Way less expensive and you can talk to your buddies as you are doing it. I belong to a 500 family club that has a 20 acre range with trails and 3D targets, etc.

We even have a foam disc target thrower - like trap shooting with flu flu arrows that do not travel far. The entire line shoots simultaneously. It is a blast to watch.

>Have you tried archery? I do both.

I have.  I like it.  I need to buy me a long bow or better, a reflex deflex Howard Hill bow... I haven't seen my bow in a while and I don't care for it that much anymore.

>Way less expensive...

Probably not "way less" since I reload and cast bullets.   Loading .38s I figure I have about a penny a round in them.  I get buckets of wheel weights usually for free but at most the price of scrap lead.

>...and you can talk to your buddies as you are doing it.

We talk.  Loudly, of course...

currently, politics might be our favorite sport

My area has a lot of equestrian sports.  Expensive.

Shooting...as expensive as you want it to be.

This might be my next.  Something I can do at home rather than having to go to the range.  We have a nice local archery shop that is very helpful.

Check your local laws regarding shooting at home. Do you have the set back you need?

I have no idea what size property you have.

I should be fine.  It's legal for me to shoot guns here, although I would not.  Should be fine for archery with the proper precautions.

Our country is so diverse it is hard to pinpoint by asking the individual.  I suppose follow the money and you will have a (commercial) answer.  The above posted answers are a sample of different sports or pastimes enjoyed by we Americans.  Some sports here, which were once popular might include fox hunting, the sport of sophistication.  Gamecock fighting once was poplar here and considered the sport of kings, as depicted by the movie Roots, (Chicken George) also the mascot of the South Carolina University is a gamecock. Both as far as I know are a thing of the past. Some pastimes here, even now include frog gigging for a simple uncomplicated example. I suppose that the big three as far as money is concerned is Baseball, Football, and Basketball and not necessarily in that order.

I was out shooting on my property with a bunch of friends and had a police officer stop a car right out front within sight. One person asked if we should stop. I told them only if you want to ask them to join us shooting. We continued shooting and they left when they were done with the speeder.

Yeah, I get it Phillip, my country is pretty diverse too you know. And yeah our professional sportsmen and women get paid heaps and the sports are commercialised, no, not like your sports and sportsmen and women but I grew up playing sport at school and clubs, didn?t you?
My point was thread is titled ?What is your country?s favourite sport??  Yet only the 15th member mentioned sports that we, over here, and perhaps the rest of the world, picture as your favourite sports and everyone else posting its hunting, shooting, kill, kill, kill. :eye roll:
After all it is an international forum and, for me at least, it doesn?t paint a really good picture for god fearing folk like yourselves.
I love my sport and added to the thread what I believed was my country?s favourite sport and hoping to hear what others sports other country?s considered their favourites. I should have known better.
Not trying to start an argument just letting you into my head.
Peace.

And yeah I?ve popped some roos for fun in my younger days

Now you have a different view although you should note that most of the people are probably from rural areas and so our idea of fun is different from what might be fun in  New York City.  Shooting and killing do not necessarily go hand in hand.  I do not hunt.  I would if I needed to, but I don't so I don't.  However, like anything, if you wish to be proficient (and safe) you practice.  + it's fun.

I don't find watching a bunch of guys tossing each other on the ground to be fun.  My husband does.  I like participations sports.  I rode cutting horses competitively for years, as an example.

If you were looking for validation of your view of Americans you may or may not have gotten it, but you did get an answer!

No argument from me. I understood you question. I realized that you meant sports. Like ABC's Wide World of Sports. Like you, I use to hunt. But I will say what we killed; we ate. No wasting Gods creatures there. Therefore I do not consider hunting a sport in that respect. You kill it, you eat it or do not kill it unless it is causing destruction to your livestock or property. Now if animals are killed and left to spoil, that I would consider more of a person's leaning to sport, which I can not, nor would not do even when I use to hunt. I was actually taught as a child that this act is sinful.  ''Son these are Gods creature, never kill one unless you are going to eat it.''  That is why I added the phrase in my above post ''The above posted answers are a sample of different sports or pastimes'' notice I added both the words ''pastimes'' and ''sports'' which included members post. I added a couple more Sports or pastimes that have been left behind, faded away or outlawed. As I stated the three main sports here in America, are Baseball, Football, and Basketball demonstrating that member was not the only one who listed sports, others in the world may picture that we enjoy here in America, but so did I.  I take no offence . Now shooting was covered heavily by some of the posters and shooting covers a large amount of territory as far as money spent. So I can not leave the shooters out on the money spent point. There are many here that shoot simply for sport such as targets, some shoot in competition etc. Very competitive and fun. Though I do not. There is a lot of money spent around firearms for different reasons. Protection is another reason which is neither sport nor pastime.  Try and understand, though your and my country originates basically from England, we did not start the same. We had to fight for our freedom, to break the chains of tyranny. That meant guns and shooting are a part of our heritage. And a guaranteed right in our Constitution, that enables we the people in the case we must fight again, again injustice and tyranny or a government gone rogue. or simply form invasion from another country. History did prove nearly a hundred years later, we again we did use shooting to defend our families, homes, and property during the Civil War, here in the south. I do not want to go any deeper on shooting as this could be perceived as a coffee house discussion if I do go any further.
But again I would say Baseball, Football, Basketball, and many others are favorites here in America. These are the big three. Tell me about Aussie rules, I am not familiar with that sport.
Phillip

Kathy is right. I live near and am influenced by New York City with its different way of looking at the world, including firearms and hunting.

I bow deer hunt mainly for nuisance  control. I do not consider hunting a sport. I usually keep one deer a year to consume and donate the rest to a food pantry.

I shoot hundreds of 3D animals a year at the archery club. Competitive target shooting is a sport.
Based on the lack of televised shooting competitions, I do not believe that shooting is our most popular sport.
