Got me some new ducks
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:36:49 pm »
I went to pick up two ducks and came home with 4  :) white runner, fawn and white runner, magpie and muscovy all female ducks and I was allowed to collect as many eggs as I could find. I will toss those in the incubator in a day or so and see if they are any good.

Addictive aren' t they! I can't keep a duck here due to the hawks. They take them as fast as I can get them.

I kept ducks for years, none at the moment. I don't like keeping Muscovies in with other ducks, especially smaller breeds like Indian runners, but even with Pekins. The Muscovies are really big and aggressive, and the Muscovy drakes really tend to intimidate the smaller females, and knock them around, especially when mating. I really think muscovies are closer to geese than ducks.

What do you do with ducks?  Why do people keep them?  Just asking.

... What do you do with ducks?  Why do people keep them?...

When things get quite or you're bored, sit a setting of duck eggs under a hen chicken, that will supply days of entertainment.  The little ducks will take to the water like ... well like a duck.  While the mother hen will loose her mind trying to coax them out of the drink.

Or you end up with ducks like we had that would panic if thrown in the water and literally run to shore!  They never swam nor their decendants and the Crick was twenty yards away.
