long lang thriving
« on: March 31, 2016, 10:32:27 pm »
The long lang I started last February  made it threw the winter beautifully. When I last checked it 2 weeks ago they still had about 10 frames of stores. They are bringing in lots of pollen. I hope to go in in a couple days when the wind dies down. Planning a split when weather gets a little better unless they swarm into my waiting top bar. That would be sweet.

Congratulations!  It's always good to hear about overwintering success.

I have a Langstroth Long Hive I put bees in last June.
They have over wintered good and are really thriving.
The long hive has 31 frames but I have it closed down with follower boards to 12 frames at this time.
I really thinking about building about 4 more this season.

I made mine to hold 32 frames. 4 individual  inner covers and a roof. Going into winter i placed 4 eight frame mediums on the inner covers for insulation . Last fall i moved 1 inner cover to the top to let them move up if desired. It has been quite fun watching  the  progression . Was your long box your first bee keeping  experience ?

With the long lang design do you use standard size honey supers?

The box is the same footprint  as 4 eight frame supers placed horizontal end to end. Since it is one   big box you wind up with 4 extra frames.
