Title: Tooth Picks or Pretzel Sticks?
Post by: Chef Isaac on January 05, 2009, 06:18:50 pm
We have always used pretzel sticks when we did craft shows and where we sold honey. However, I am rethinking this idea.

I have noticed some people cant eat the pretzels cause of wheat allergy. I also find that kids (and a lot of adults) just stand around and eat the pretzels dipped in honey (and yes, we can tell those people who want to buy versus the "shrimp" eaters who just hover over to eat cause they are hungry). The nice thing about the pretzels is the sweet and salty play on the palate and the fact that there needs to be no garabe cans around. Any there has been people who love to take a handful of pretzels and walk away like they are in some bar.

The tooth picks would be nice cause they will taste a smaller amount of honey and it should detour the people wh oare just eating for the heck of it. But there needs to be a garabge can.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas?

A gal who gave a presentation to our club last year told us that she uses a tiny little plastic spoon, they are cheap (costco). I guess it is a big deal with the health department guys and the farmers markets.

Double dipping can be a real health department concern which is more likely with pretzel sticks.  Tiny plastic spoons or popsicle sticks usually gets the message across on the honey and discourages double dipping.

I think the tiny spoons or the popsicle sticks are better, a toothpick may not hold enough for a sample and without the flat surface it could be drippy.

How about a small card or sign...

"please have a free sample"
"have a second if your unsure"
"have three...and your paying for dinner!"

Those wooden coffee stirrers would work, & are compostable!  :-D  They are thinner so would take up less space.  I bet you can get em at Costco or Sams. J
