15 Minutes
« on: January 14, 2020, 08:54:02 pm »
Hives painted (two of them) and all parts in place to receive the nucs I bought.  Stands built and legs are treated with preservative.  The cross members just below the hives will be painted the same color as the hives (Valspar exterior latex State of Mind) and I need 15 minutes to add one more coat of paint to them later this evening.  72 in January?  Am taking advantage of it!

Hive stands are unique.  Two legs of each one go into the ground a foot for stability.  Will tamp them in hard with a pinch point bar.

The stands are 18" tall.  The bottom board plus single deep of the Paradise polystyrene hive system amounts to 13", which puts the top of the brood chamber 31" high, nice for not having to stoop over too much.

Another warm day tomorrow means I can install the stands in the new apiary.
41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them.

Glad some folks are warm.  Soon to be high 38F, low in the teens for 3 consecutive days, that is Arkansas for ya.  Glad for your warmth!!!!!!  Mine coming in March.
Blessings
I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.

Wild turkey and honeybees, sounds like an interesting combination: natures finest.  Must be beautiful to watch.  Honeybees buzzing and turkeys gobbling would be a calming, very pleasing, peaceful effect to me.
Blessings

Mmm - turkeys! Absolutely wonderful - 2.5 mins/lb deep fried (in peanut oil), my favorite recipe. Mmmmm ... delicious!!!!

There are also deer, armadillos, porcupines, and no telling what else in these woods.  That is a cotton patch in the background.  It is owned by the city and my nephew farms it for them.

I made my first hive stands 18" high, got the no stooping thing whipped.  Then these hives were 3 and 4 deeps tall.  Now I had to stand on a step ladder to remove the frames and then the boxes.  All of my stands are no more than 12" now.  I am fortunate to have two friends that like to work bees that are 6'3" and built like a NFL tight end.  I am also blessed to have hives 3 and 4 high. I am going to get a fold up work stand that is adj. to 19 inches high.

Going to try small hive management (one deep body for the brood chamber) and use top bars in the one super on top.

1. Thanks for the picture. Interesting and well made.
2. If you want to go to a single broodbox, check the YouTube videos of Devan Rawn. He explains things very well, and is easy to follow.

Devan Rawn has some good commonsense videos.

Thanks.

Bought the treated 4x4s fresh (and treated it more, especially the cut ends) but the rest is scrap from other projects and some boards my friend, knife maker Thomas Bullard, gave me.

The stands have cantilevered 2x2 beams out the back for a little shelf to hold my smoker and whatever.

Hoping the preservative will keep ants out.

That's a different guy.  Thomas lives outside of town here.

But yes, those Tom Bullard knives are nice!

About 20 years ago I received an email from Jim Hrisoulas wondering if I was the Bill Bagwell. He had seen a post of mine in a blacksmith forum... Needless to say I am not. But was cool to receive mail from someone that famous.
