Built my first Warre hive + winter feeding?
« on: September 30, 2011, 02:12:38 am »
Hi everyone. I finally finished my first Warre hive and I must say I am pretty happy with the outcome. Now I understand why Warre called these hives "Peoples hives". I was able to put it together for less than $40 and that makes me really happy considering that I still have plenty of screws, brads and some lumber left.

From reading the book by Warre I understand that these hives are designed so, that feeding the colony in the winter is not necessary. However, last winter we had here in Kansas temperatures reaching one day 80 and the next 20  . I guess I am afraid that winter consumption of honey may be higher if we encounter warm spells like last year in the future. I would think that additional feeding of candy or cakes may be needed. If so and some of you use Warre hives out there, would you let me know what to use and how to apply it in the hive?
