Update from eivindm 2009-07-19: I have now created a new membership map. Click here to view the map (http://www.morkland.org/tmp/map.html). The maps below are outdated and will no longer be updated (but I keep them there for historical reasons).
(http://www.morkland.org/tmp/map.png) (http://www.morkland.org/tmp/map.html)
The markers are placed on the map according to the google map database. If you are placed at a different place than you actually live, please change the location in your user profile (typically by adding a country name or state) and wait for me to update the map. You can test your location string at maps.google.com (http://maps.google.com/) as it will give you the same placement on that map as on the beemaster.com membership map.
All markers that overlap each other are clustered together and represented by a number. Click on the cluster marker to zoom in. As soon as you have zoomed in enough for the markers to not overlap, they will be represented as regular markers. Click on a marker to see who is living there.
At any time, click on the "List visible users" button over the map to get a (paginated) list of users that live within the current map view. By zooming in to a smaller view where fewer people live, the list of visible user will be changed equally.

I am going to post Eivindm's 2 membership maps here.
He has done a great job and I'm sure that everyone will want to check to see if they have some new nieghbors. Click on the blue numbers to see the membership list for that state

Hats off to Eivindm.
Not only did he do a fine job on these maps and the list, but he is also keeping them updated.
Thanks, Great Job!

I'm from New Mexico, living in Iraq and moving to Utah when I get home. Does that get New Mexico like a 1/3 of a person rating :D

You better keep me updated on your moves so the map count follows you :-)

Hey, I recognize two people from my very own local bee club! OK, ok, I knew they were here. Cool anyway!
-
I just took a look at the membership listing and EVERY SINGLE REAL MEMBER (discounting the computer generated ones) but all the real members have added a location - BRAVO to them!!!!
I hope this is a sign of things to come - having this info is very helpful for many reasons and I'm glad that the new membership has caught on to the need to give us their basic location to help map the world with our membership.
Great Job everyone, statistically we have some really awesome days ahead and as Franky goes to Hollowood said "The World is our Oyster!" and we really are getting a large collection of states and countries that without Eivindm map, we would really NOT have a clue of the true demographics represented here. Great work all.

It's been a while since I posted this link, so I can't think of a better area right now to post the link to the DEGREE CONFLUENCE PROJECT @ http://www.confluence.org - quick recap about this 5 STAR website: Around the planet there are thousands of intersecting longitude and latitude locations on the globe. The theme of this site is for ordinary people to trek to these locations ( called Confluences ) and take photos of the exact intersection, and images North, South, East and West while standing at that confluence.
The adventures use GPS devices to prove their location - see the actual photo of the location documented by camera and all the photos of villages, cities and the secluded wilds of the world.
This may sound easy and sometimes it is, but MOST of the time the confluences are smack in the middle someones home, in the middle of a stream, high atop a mountain ridge, deep in a valley or even moles and miles into never before visited dense forrest.
What really makes the site neat is the stories people write concerning their trip to the confluence, sometimes it is a trip planned YEARS in advance. other times it is a rope climb down a 1000ft cliff into a valley of snakes.
But the code (the admin uses a similar program to this forum) is so interactive that you can literally find any single confluence by location, finder, and a multitude of ways. The images are great, the stories are pure adventure and you will get to see parts of the world that our membership come from like you have never seen before.
Just as an example, there are only 5 confluences in New Jersey (Beemaster's state) - and only 885 in the entire USA. so don't think these confluences are a dime a dozen, it is a rare treat to see these and an amazing feat to have actually made their way through unimaginable terrain to actually log the confluence for the world to share. These people (and you could be one of them) are modern day Lewis and Clarks, Magellans, and other explorers - share their experiences and see the world without ever having to leave this website.
On the main page JUST LOOK at all the Countries Listed and you will be hooked. Have fun if you have never been here before.
Lastly, I strongly suggest downloading one of the free Text to Speech readers (from the Download and software section) to let the PC read some of the longer posts while you look at the images and surf. But if you like reading, then I promise THIS SITE is one you will come back to again and again.

Hi!
Sprry for being slow on the updates the last days. Been home with a fever :-( Have to be at the University to look into it, and I'm afraid I won't be there until january. Until then, happy christmas.

I am now back again after the hollidays and have now updated the maps again. Sorry for the delay.

Welcome back and I'm surely not talking about you!!!
I mean the people who post their location as:
These are Not actual samples, but close...
Somewhere between my front yard and back yard.
Near where I park my car.
Close to the Interstate.
Near my Baby-Daddy's Uncle's Mamma.
About THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSS far from a major Ocean.
You know the ones - lol.
It's just hard to get a straight answer. Keep up the mapping, awesome work!!!

LOL!! You really got me laughing there! I have used some time to figure out such locations and it often results in a PM to the user :-)
-
You surely are getting a geography lesson - It amazes me the VAST areas of the world where I am assume they don't have internet access - look at Russia and Africa, and although I know it is probably foolish of me to relate the NON-MEMBERSHIP from those areas to internet access, I do see patterns forming. It really is eye-opening.
-
These are the members that contribute or read these posts? Very impressive.
How come its only a few of us who contribute?
Rob
-
These are the members that contribute or read these posts?
These are all members who have written their location in their profiles.
-
I think some of the members who joined a long time ago are still around - reading posts - but just never feel like posting for some reason. I really like posting. It's not so much that I have a question, but I just like the conversations, seeing what other people are doing around the world, and sharing what's going on in my life. Since it's a beekeeping forum, most of my posts will be about beekeeping - unless it's winter like now. :)
That's my only answer concerning why there are so few members who contribute. Even though their not contributing, I believe they still come by and read stuff.
Beth

Way cool. 8) Cept, nobody in NE with me. *sniffle* But there is hope, last week while driving home I saw two hives in someone’s back yard, might go over when the weather warms up and say "hi".
The blue numbers won't work for me, but that's just like my computer.

Some people are uncomfortable with giving out their real location online. I never used to give it out, now I'll give out my state.
-
What can I do to make this work for me. There are 8 from VT and I'd be interested in knowing where they are.
As for why some people don't post more, if they are like me, I don't feel I know enough to give advice but I am interested in what others have to say.

What can I do to make this work for me.
The images shown directly on this page are not "clickable" (due to very frustrating (but understandable) technical limits of phpBB). Use this link (http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~eivindm/diverse/beebbs/usmap.cgi) (the link is also directly under the map above) to get a map where you can click on the numbers. You can also look at this textfile (http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~eivindm/diverse/beebbs/beemaster_stats.txt) to get a full list of members sorted by state.
-
Thanks for your help. I did get to the map that "works". It was fun to see where everyone is. Some of the folks from Vermont are a little vague about their location but at least one is fairly close.
-
Map is out of date says 5-11-05. I was just trying to collect some data off it.

Yep! Now we are down to three missing states. We used to have 5 or 6 some months ago. Didn't spot this myself as the updating is semi automatic :-) Cool

Hi! You didn't botch anything, but spotted a bug in the system. I have fixed the bug now, although I still scracth my head to find out what really happened to my code :-) Thanks for telling me.
The maps are once again updated (except for a couple of new countries I need to add to the map, and which I will do soon).

The server seems to be down for some reason. I better check with the university what is going on down there :-)
Update a few hours later: I reported the faulty server the IT department, and now it's back up.

If some of you have looked at my maps lately and found it a bit outdated, you can take a new look now. I've done a full update today which should include both new members and udpates to the location of old members.
-
E!!!!!
Thank you for UPDATING the map - wow!!!!
I'll delete out all posts that are NOT relevant any longer and MAYBE make this a NON-REPLY POST to keep it clean looking.
Great work and I'm happy to see an up date! Only 3 states I think now that are missing, but them tricky countries are gonna be a while - lol.
PS.... did you get the message about the Hindenburg Certificate????

There are 2 Alaska Members in the Alabama section. The one member listed in Alaska may be lonely

The summer went by way too fast this year, and it has been too long since I updated these maps. But they finally got updated today :-)
-
When will you be updating again. I just joined and was looking for someone close to home to help me out.
-
I will try to do it during the week. The days are flying by these days as the job rquires my attention full time :?
-
I also added my location to my profile. Thanks for all the hard work!!
-
Neat map, I'm from southwestern British Columbia Canada. How do I get on the map?
-
I'm afraid it has been a while since I updated last time. I have been really busy at work lately, and it's been too long since my last udpate. The only thing you need to do to get on the map, is to update your profile with your location (country, or state if you're from the US, will do). Then you have to wait until I have made the next update. Hopefully it will bee soon.
-
The migration from phpBB to SMF gave me a bit problems updating these maps as the location information in SMF is not provided in the same way as in phpBB (you have to look at each members profile to see the member's location). But now this problem is solved with some help from one of the other moderators. This means that the udpates of these maps will be performed far more often than in the past as the workload for each update is far less.
As I updated the maps today, we have over 900 members placed on the maps!
I still have some problems pointing out the location for some of the users that has provided localization info. With a location like "usa" I am not able to place you on the map. It is also of tremendous help with the state info provided. Let's say you live in hoobdoobatown in texas. With just "hoobadoobatown" I will have to do some research to find out where you live, and if the name of this town also exists in North Dakota, I can not say which state you live in. With the location set to "hoobadoobatown, tx" or "hoobadoobatown, texas", the update of the maps goes much much smoother. And besides, you will get far more accurate answers as the information about the climate (which the person that answers is far more likely to know something about if the information about which state you live in is provided) is a vital part of many answers.
The same goes for all of you that live in other countries. With just "Oslo" in the location I guess many of you would have a hard time knowing where I live. With "Oslo, Norway" some of you might have a clue about where I live. If you don't, I suggest you take a look at a map of the world anyway ;)
So please make sure your location provide acurate information in your profile. If you don't want to say which town you live in, that's ok, but the name of the state or the name of the country you live in would still be good.
I have a busy schedule these days, so 5 or 6 of you are not placed on the map yet, as the coordinates on the map of the country you live in is not defined yet. I hope to update this quite soon though.
-
Awesome E that you now have the data you need - great update!!!
-
hey evendim, i have moved since the previous update, i now live in parachute co.
nice to see the map updated
-
These maps are nice, thanks for doing this.
I have seen some other club maps that show more precise Lat/Lon coordinates such as the one that shows my weather station location:
http://www.acme.com/mapper/?ll=40.05517,-105.09750&z=16&t=O (http://www.acme.com/mapper/?ll=40.05517,-105.09750&z=16&t=O)
The cross-hairs at the very center show exactly where my weather station is located.
I'm wondering if there would be some way to have a map like that one that shows the exact location of bee hives.
If so, this could be very interesting and useful. For example, our county government often sprays for mosquitos (west nile threat) during the summer. Our local beekeeping club keeps a paper map with "pins" where members identify their hives on the map. Supposedly the county is supposed to check this map before spraying to avoid killing bees. Since there is only the one physical map, I doubt they can check it every time.
If the map were online (like the weather-station map), then they could easily check from any location, time or day.
Does anyone here have any experience with such maps? Are there mapping sites that a club or interest group can use to precicely pinpoint their locations with GPS coordinates?
-
You could make a Google Earth .KLM file with the GPS Coordinates of your hives as landmarks. You can label each location and add other pertinant information if you like. You can combine them all into one file. Then when you click the file, it will show them all in Google earth, and you can zoom to any one of them you want. The initial zoom will go close enough to show them all at the same time, and then you can zoom more precicely on your own from there, if you need to.

That sounds like it might work, but would it only work from the computer that has the .KLM file, or would anyone from any computer be able to see the landmarks and labels?
-
The .KLM would have to be downloaded to each computer. They are small, like downloading an image. You can post the .KLM on a website or whatever, and can be downloaded from there.

Sorry for a *very* slow response. I looked into it now, and you had been sorted out right and placed under PA, but the window size was too low for all the usernames to be shown in the popup window on my computer. I guess that could be the reason you couldn't see it either. I have now increased the window size of the popup window. If this is still too low, rezizing of that window should do. I should really make a better solution to this :-)

thanks it works now

You are in fact already on the map after the last update I made just now. As long as you have written your location in the profile (as you have done), and this is easiliy recognizable (as SC is), you will be automatically placed on the map :)

I've just modified my profile to include our home in Lebanon, Maine - we're getting three nucs up there this spring. Could you include a marker there, too?

Hi!
I noticed lebanon recently, and had it on my todo-list for new country additions (among jamaica and a few others). But I now see I was terribly mistaken as you live in Maine USA :) But since you edited your location and added ME, you will soon be placed under Maine. I just need an update from the forum software, which I get once a day. So sometime soon, you will be be placed on the map where you should :-)

Actually we shouldbe in two places. This is Woodchopper, Reinbeau's husband, we have two homes with bees, one in Hanson, MA, one in Lebanon, ME. I'm going to put Lebanon in my profile, so it will be picked up. Thank you.

It is automatic as long as you have updated your location in your profile (which you did). Every night, the forum software updates the member list and provides it to Eivind for his map. I'm not sure how often he update the map, but it shouldn't take too long.

Sorry for a very slow reply. It has been busy times at work with a lot of overtime.
I have plans to make it full automatic, but the servers I use at the moment do not have a few essential libraries, so I need to do some tricks to make it work there. So many plans, so little time :-( In the meantime I must do this manually. I try to do this a few times a week, but I'm afraid I haven't been so quick lately. I'll try to improve :-)

Quite undersatandable my friend, with thta new baby and overtime,it's a wonder you have time to sleep!!

There are 37 canadians on the map. As long as canada (or the specially handled alberta, ontario, b.c and a few other places) are placed in the location, you will be placed in canada. If you wanted a separate map with canada just as USA has its own map in addition to the world map, it is not very likely to happen I am afraid :-)

Eivndn. Gotcha, understood, that is really quite OK. One day.....have the most beautiful and awesomely wonderful day, Cindi

i just tried to use the list and the VT list of 16 came up at the NH list of 15 so I pushed the NH list thinking the two were mixed but that was not the case the NH list came up for NH. I want to see who is keeping bees in my area!! :-x

The coordinates seems to be a bit inaccurate. If you click up right in
VT or "16", you hits NH. All other places it hits VT correctly in my
browser.
Anyway, you can always look at the complete list (http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~eivindm/diverse/beebbs/beemaster_stats.txt)

You are already there :-)
The only thing you need is to enter a location in your profile. If this containes a state name, my script will normally place you correctly. In your case you were already on the map. I'm not sure when you entered your location, but at least you were included in the maps when I ran the script 5-6 hours ago or so :-)

Thank you so very much, what a wonderful tool you have created for all of us, I am appreciative of your fast and kind response.....thank you so much!!! and thank you for creating this for all of us!! MEANS a lot to know who is in the area.....I appreciate it so much!!

Cool setup! Just for curiosity...how long have you been working on this "final" map. I looked up at the previous posts and it does go back to 2004 but is this final map "new"?

I was looking at the map today looking for beeks near Crossville, TN and checked our listings - and our main location, Hanson, Massachusets, isn't listed - we have two locations, the Lebanon, Maine home is our second home - could we please also be listed in Hanson, MA?

I was looking at the map today and I see no one on the map ????????????????????????

reinbeau: I'm sorry, but this is difficult to achieve. If you make a search on google maps for "Hanson, MA and Lebanon, ME" you won't get any direct hit. So in short; the system does not handle more than one location in the location field. It won't be easy for me to fix it either I'm afraid since all the placements is handled automatically.
Jim 134: It worked fine earlier today for me, and it works for me now also. Could you please try again, and if you get any type of errors from your browser, please let me know.

Eivindm,
I changed my location in my profile. How long before the system updates it?
Thanks
-
hey
this map is such a cool idea!! :)
How does my location have to be so i will show in the map? Is it ok city and country, or should it be coordinates?
-
Thanks for the reply!
First of all: Sorry for all of you who has not made it to the map yet. The reason is that the map update software is on the wrong computer at the moment. I have switched work computer, and it is still on the old one. I Have made a made a task point in my task list and will move the software as soon as possible and get into a much more frequent update schedule.
You have done the correct thing and written the location. I use google maps for placement, and if you test your location string in a google maps search and you hit the correct place, it is sufficient.
My goal is to place the script on a server where it can be automatically run every day, but I have not got so far yet in lack of a suitable server.

The map is now updated.

Beautiful!..............Worldwide!!!

Wow! That is really nice, but I don't see Hardwood on there. Larry

I jave now made a fix to the map adding 230 new places which for some reason had failed to get to the map (the lookup on google map had failed). We now have more than 2700 locations on the map.
So take a new look, zoom to your area and test the "list visible users" button.

I can't get the map to work. Larry

I live in Nicaragua... it looks like several (4?) members also live here. I would like to get in touch with them. Can someone tell me how?
Thanks
-
If you zoom in on the map so the area you are interrested in is in focus, you can then click on the button "List visible users". You will then see their user name here in the forum, and you can also click on the link to their profile.
In the profile you can click on the link "Send personal message".

very cool. i had no idea there were so many in my area. great improvement!!!!! thanks.
-
I am NOT complaining...
BUT there is no one in Nicaragua... not even me but I am relatively new. This is a neat TOOL.
-
maybe you are the only one....i don't remember any other members from Nicaragua.
your membership probably hasn't caught up with the map.

You must set the location in your member profile to be placed on the map, which as far as I can see, you have not yet done. I made a few checks to see if something has gone wrong, but can not see anyone with nicaragua set in their location. The maps updates once a day (1100 GMT at summer time, and 12 GMT at winter time) every day as long as my work laptop is running (which normally means monday-friday).

eivindm...
Thanks. You were correct. You must be as busy as a bee.
-
I bee on the map, but don't remember doing anything to get there.

Every member with a location text in the user profile that is recognizable by google maps will end up on this map.

Great job Eivindm; looked up my local and there it is WOW! My mailing address and zip are where it shows, although i actually live closer to the town of Merlin, Or. Kinda out in the sticks so to speak. And dont laugh at my Okie ways!
-
Great job, Eivindm. Very interesting! God's blessings!
-
Looks like it needs updating again (may 2012 last post) I looked and I'm not on map.. JPP

Could I recommend that everyone update your location to the commonly accepted format of City, County, State? If you are outside of the USA, add Country after State. (Or, if your country has not states, just country instead of state). Is this OK with Mr. Moderator? Thanks. -James Wagner

That is strictly a personal preference. Some people have concerns over privacy issues, and I understand that. It is to there benefit to be as geographical specific, but if it makes them uncomfortable to be too specific, we will not mandate it.
-
I noticed that the map had not been updated in a while. The laptop that used to run the update task has got a re-install. I didn't realize that I had killed the map update job until now. The update job has now been moved to a server and should once again be updated once a day. I have just run the job, and all data should now be up to date.

Awesome Eivind!! :)
