Post by: Brian MCquilkin on September 10, 2021, 02:43:43 pm
Saw a video from  Bob Binnie on using a drum and trolling motor to mix sugar syrup. Thought I would give it a try, 55gal mixed in about 15 min works really well... Pics are of me mixing up a drum of syrup
Here is the link to the video if interested. Pics are of me mixing up a drum of syrup

Very innovative, what mix were you mixing?
Local BK mixes an IBC, 1000 liters with a pressure washer that heats its own water, also effective.

I mixed  2 to 1  That was 23 X 25 Lbs bags of sugar. Interesting about the pressure washer and IBC., I Will keep that in mind for the future

I like to keep things simple and utilize what is on hand laying around. The simplest barrel mixer setup is to set into the bottom a submersible sump/utility pump. 1/2hp is ideal and is plenty for a barrel. Put a couple of 45 deg elbows, tees, whatever on the outlet. Be creative on varied directions of the fittings but keep it short, turbulent, and circular. 3 outlets is plenty. A heating band on the barrel also helps immensely.  Properly setup, it takes little time to mix and fully dissolve a batch. 15-20 minutes or so.

Here's the one I put together on the cheap, free pool pump, plastic drum, PCV and fittings, hose bib and ball valve. Works well, I have a short piece of water hose I put on the hose bib to fill buckets.

Bill and Rast, I too have had some difulcity posting pictures recently. I have used resizer in the past with success but somehow I got offtrack. The15thMember post beautiful pictures here. I told her of my situation and the following was her PMed advice.  She has graciously given me her permission to post it here.

Quote
"I use Microsoft Paint on Windows 8, so you will need a PC for this to work, and it may be slightly different if you have another version of Windows.  Open your file explorer, go to your pictures, and right click on the picture you want to resize.  Roll over "Open with" and choose Microsoft Paint.  In Paint you'll see a button that says "Resize" and if you click that it opens a window where you can reduce the picture by a percentage.  For most of my pictures, I make them about 20% of their original size, but it will depend on your camera how much you need to reduce them.  When you are happy with the size of the image, click save and at the bottom it will tell you the new file size.  Just be sure the individual pictures are less that 200 kb and you'll be good to go."

I have added reply 8 to the sticky topic   "How to resize a photo to be able to post it on BeeMaster"

I hope this helps.

rast,  looks like a great setup. do you have a problem with bees trying to rob it while mixing outdoors?

I haven't yet Brian, they will come clean up what I spill afterwards. Carpenter ants are my biggest nemesis around here, they get in under the lid I keep on it. Heck, just last week they got in my boat and went up into the little vent hole in the tachometer and it went haywire. I pulled the tach and here they came pouring out of it. Thanks for the complement, sure is easier than anything else I have tried.
