Rain gutter gardening

I saved a couple long sections of gutter from the roof/gutter replacement.
Do any of you do rain gutter gardening and are you just using a potting soil?
What did you use for a framework?

I tried it about 10 years ago.  It didn't last too long.  I had a hard time keeping it watered enough.  I should have set up irrigation with it.  Potting soil will dry out really quick without some additive to retain moisture.  I was trying it for strawberries and once the berries were done it was hard to remember to water the plants.

As far a framework, I just used some steel fence posts and tied the gutter to them.
