looks like he's holding the queen? odd article, but good pic.

Where do they get these numbers?
If a queen laid 2,000 eggs every day it would take her 4.1 years to lay 3,000,000 eggs.
If 2 queens laid 4,000 eggs total per day, it would take 2 years to lay 3,000,000 eggs.
Then when you factor in the life expectancy of the bees, it would take many years to reach that number.... Oh wait. It would never reach that number

That is an odd article. You've got to watch out for those aggressive Italian bees - almost as bad as AHB.
And I would think a hive of 3 MILLION bees might have produced more than 60 pounds of honey. A hive of 3 million bees would fill what? Something like 30 deeps?
Unless my math is way off, I don't figure I even have quite 1 million bees in my 18 hives.

If the queen laid 1 egg per second and rested for 1 second after every 5 eggs, and kept that pace up day and night... then they could make it up to 3 million in just 42 days... of course, there wouldn't be enough bees to tend to all that brood, so it could/would never happen in 3 million years...
