I could use some tips on feeding
« on: August 03, 2017, 06:50:00 pm »
Hi folks,
I haven't fed since my first year of bee keeping.
I started out with the entrance feeding jars then later baught a couple feeding frames with the floating screens.
I quit feeding because I always left them enough honey for the winter.
This year I was thinking of taking most of the honey and feeding them for their winter needs.
I recently saw an advertisement on the two frame frame feeder.
Are these any good?
Is there something easier?
I have heard of bag feeders they sound good but I have never seen one .
What would you recommend?
I have 9 hives and they mostly 3 deep with 3 supers.
Thank you.
Andy

I personally would rather leave enough honey but when I do feed I feed bricks. I take a bag of sugar and leave it open on hot humid days and it solidifies. Then I take empty foundationless frames put the brick in them and put it in a box on top. You could skip the frames and just use the box but then they could make a mess of comb on the cover.

For the feeding of such large hives I'd recommend using large capacity 'rapid feeders', such as the Miller design.

The frame feeders from Mann Lake with the hooks and ladders work well.
