I have made two five gallon batches of mead in the last two years. Each batch has blown some corks, each batch was in the glass carboy for 9-12 months. After I bottled them they were sitting upright for months without any problems but when I layed them on there sides they have blown corks.

Be glad the corks are blowing and not the glass breaking! You need to learn about sulfite and sorbate to stop the fermentation and then kill the yeast. I bet you have some nice sparkling mead before they blow. I suppose that when you lay the bottle on it's side you are stirring up a bit of yeast residue and it is finding enough sugar to produce the overabundance of C02 that blows the corks. That is the only reason I can think of for what you are describing. Hopefully the brewcat will give you the word.
