red bud tree seeding ?

(1/1)

Stan:
The Red Buds are covered with seed pods.

My initial question was do you plant the seed or pod.  I would like to be able to use them to seed another area.

After much searching I now know you plant the seed.   But you have to do a lot of other things before you plant them.

You put the seed in boiling water for 30 to 60 seconds, then keep them just above freezing for about three months.

Then plant.    So I have a box full of pods and will see what happens next spring.

Stan,
I have never planted any of the redbud(Cercis canadensis) seeds, but I have transplanted many volunteer seedlings over the years. They sprout all over the place.Usually in the flower beds or under the decorative shrubs around my place. Some have even sprouted in the control lines of my concrete car pad. They usually transplant well-although I do water them for the first few weeks until they become more established. BTW it is a very pretty tree and the bees just cover these small trees every spring.
