When to start spring feeding
« on: March 08, 2005, 07:04:46 pm »
Hi Guys,

Were having sort of a wierd winter here, it is 65F today, and it has been warm for a while now. When do you guys start your spring feeding? Nothing has bloomed yet, but it all has buds on it. They have been taking cleansing flights during the day. Should I be feeding them yet?

When to start spring feeding

Scott,

It is a bit cold back here, but I generally test the hive for weight to see if they are in need of feeding by lifting one end of the top hive body. Feed if light so they can make it through til spring blossoms. Otherwise you might feed in a couple of weeks to stimulate spring build up however, beware of swarming if they build too much.  Some people don't feed if they don't need to in the spring.
