A member in another forum has put together a useful map of all things blooming (http://www.drobbins.net:8080/blooms/index.jsp). Please be aware if you hit the Show All button your computer will slow to a crawl - but for specific blooms and dates this map is pretty cool!
-
Dave (and Jim) have been working on this for a long while.
I know they started collecting info a few years back.
As it ages, it should give truer and truer info.
It is good to give them proper recognition for a unique product like this.
As more people realize it exists, purhaps more people will contribute.
I am guilty for not helping the cause.... But now that I see some results I will.

Could this possibly be made into a sticky? It really is a good resource for keeping track of our honeybee nectar and pollen sources.

Crocuses just started here.

Crocuses just started here.
Did you click on the link and post it? All you need is your zip code!
-
Yes I've added it, I just decided to bump the thread. I think it's a great idea.
-
Great website! Maybe it will help me figure out where my girls are getting the white pollen I see them bringing in. I haven't seen anything blooming here yet except crocuses
-
here in NW georgia we have daffodils and goldenrod going strong, my blueberries are starting to bud

Hi Folks,
This is my 4th spring posting data and I'm really beginning to see the benefit of being able to look back at previous years
when you make a post, be sure to put stuff in the comments field
It'll be very useful years from now

Hey All,
My first posting here on this site. Calling from North Pender Island, British Columbia, Canada (Canada's west coast).
We are just in the middle of a massive broom and lupin blossom and are anxiously awaiting the blackberries. Most of our trees are now in full bloom/leaf with thanks to our bees.

What site? The Map of What's Blooming? It's not down.
-
Took awhile for it to load for me but it was there. First time seeing the map but think its a great idea.
-
sorry folks
I had some other stuff running on the machine that was slowing it down
it should be back to normal now
the original intent was to be able to display the progress of warm weather in the spring and how it relates to the bloom dates you folks add. I've been messing with it some lately and I'm close to having it all working
keep posting data in there
Dave
-
The map is working today.

Looks like I am a solo beek out here. I will atleast update my area this spring. It did not have a spot to add that snow and ice was in bloom.
-
The information is a year old. Nice work though. Hope it will be updated soon.
-
Folks
the "What's Blooming" map now charts GDD's for each zipcode a bloom has been entered for
GDD's are a running total of how far above 50F the daily high is
so if it got up to 60F today the GDD's would increase by 10
this let's you see how the weather progresses as spring goes along and compare to past years
http://www.drobbins.net/bee%27s/blooms.html
Enjoy
Dave
-
I would think that what's on the charts now could be put on a page called " History" and new items as in "this year" be posted on the present page. Been watching for months now and still no updated information. Seems to me that people will not use it if there is the "same old stuff" there. Thats the reason the forums are so helpfull, things change by the second.

Hi Folks
I had a harddrive failure back in June and once I got things put back together the URL for the app changed and didn't match what's posted in the original post of this thread. I fixed it and will enter the data people have posted here as soon as I get to it
The new URL is http://www.drobbins.net/bees/blooms.html
The old one will still work too
Sorry bout that :)

I am here in 30062,
I always am wondering where my bees are going and what they are working. I rarely see them working anything in my yard and not even in the garden. Yesterday I was again watching my bees come back to the hives with pollen on their legs. Is there any way to tell where they are going and track them? Also, I was wondering if local pollen count would be something a beekeeper could use gauge nectar flows? It seems to be documented very well because of people with allergies. The site listed below is very detailed.

I'm getting connection refused. Is the site still operating?
-
Please add 29073 to the map, I will try to keep updated with the blooms.
How would I let you know? Or can I do it my self?

Hey there...
I LOVE this idea; it'll someday make things much easier to plan your hives. especially for newbees like me.
I'm in 95558 on the Lost Coast of California
our spring bloom is really nice right now after a good five day sunshine. willows and Bay/Laurel are both blooming right now. in the higher elevations where some of my friends keep bees manzanita is getting started. Please add me to your database, I'd love to stay active and add things as they bloom.

I cannot believe how many WI beeks are on here!! Welcome, oldwalt!
Can somebody tell me if bees get anything from bleep willows? I hear willows are a great first source, but is that weeping willow, bleep willow or other? We have the first 2 in the neighborhood.
I saw my girls bringing in yellow pollen. We also have chickweed right now. Is this chickweed or pollen being robbed from the dead hive nextdoor?

45103-- White clover, catnip, sage, salvia, agastache, conflower, squash, cukes, hostas...
I'm a newbee so not good at this. So I went through my garden to see what the honey bees like, and then did a hike in the woods to see what I could see. The main thing blooming that they are all over is white clover, Melilotus albus. I didn't even know that was clover until I looked it up.
In my gardens, the bees (and everything else) are all over the blooming catnip, Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), Hysop/Black Adder (Agastache), and the purple coneflowers. May Night Salvia (Salvia superba) is a bit spent, but bees still seem somewhat interested.
Probably doesn't count, but squash and cukes in my small veggie garden are blooming as well.
Hostas bloomed some weeks ago and the bees were on them. They are still blooming, but many blooms are now spent and I didn't see bees on the newer ones.
Tons of Queen Anne's Lace /wild carrot blooming right in front of the hive and not a single bee on it. They couldn't bee less interested in hydrangeas that are right behind the hive, either, or daisies, roses, or lots of other stuff. But I guess that's only news to me.

NE Ohio; Liatris (gayfeather) which the bees love more than just about anything. I think I would have more bees on my liatris than on a frame of honey left out! Purple coneflower which my bees like. Cleome (spiderflower) which they gravitate to when the liatris starts dying out. Teasel, which bees really like around here (especially bumblers).

The bees are bringing in pollen now. Not sure of the source. Did find the Skunk Cabbage to be in bloom. Generally it's the first pollen of the season.

You got that right. I noticed the maples coming out bright red about 5 days ago, mullberry is starting to bud (it's a strange fruit where the flower is internal and never exposed, no nectar or pollen for the girls -- but I am glad to see them breaking open).
-
I figure out the main pollen is coming from the Silver maples, now in bloom.
-
It was 61 degrees here in Eastern Kansas (near Kansas City) today. The bees were bringing in a dull, light colored pollen. I'm not sure what variety it is as I can't see anything blooming yet.
The forcast for the next two days is highs in the 30's and lows in the mid 20's. I sure hope it doesn't wipe out the pollen source.

Our Rose of Sharon is blooming here in East TN, as well as Trumpet Vine (cow itch) and I noticed a lovely hardwood tree that I didn't recognize out on the river. 23 June. Our red clover is coming in and some white as well. My melons and pumpkins are blooming. Lots of roadside wildflowers. I have Zinnias blooming and roses too. Mimosa trees are blooming wildly. That's all I can think of for the moment. My bees are really busy, so there must be something good out there for them...

I have tried to look at this twice now with about a two week break between attempts. It will not load. There is more to doing web info than just getting it on the web. they will have to make it more accessible to be of any use to me. I will say it would be nice to have reliable bloom info. What I get in this case is a page that does nothing but endlessly tries to load. Not much info in that.
